Past week or so, I'm not getting the results I should. Sometimes I get an error at the top of the page.

For example - can't search for title of thread:

Go to search and type "compressor test" and see if you find my test thread. It doesn't come up for me.

Go to search and type "lista". One thread that came up did not have the word anywhere within the thread. I didn't check them all....

Errors

I get the following when I search for "motor":

Warning: unpack(): Type n: not enough input, need 2, have 0 in /sphinxapi.php on line 158

Warning: array_values(): The argument should be an array in /sphinxapi.php on line 158

This can be caused by a corrupted index in the forums, or more likely, the system is overloaded at that time, and can't properly process the task. Try again when it happens. It is on the software/server side of the system, so there is nothing that you can do about this. I personally have not experienced this myself. From what I remember, it is more prevalent with the older versions of the VBulletin, and has been corrected with the later versions.
I just tried your example "motor" and got the error. It is because the system is set to process more characters than you have entered. If you expand that to "electric motor", then it will work fine. The administrator might be able to "tweak" the system to allow a search for less characters. I am not that familiar with the older versions of VBulletin, so I can't say for certain.

Yea, but when you search for "compressor test" do you find my test thread? That doesn't seem to be working either.

Works for me...... I did a copy and paste of your words just in case it might have been a spelling problem, and I did get a result. I haven't read the thread to see if it is the one that you posted in, but, as I said, I did get a valid result. If you continue to have problems, I suggest that you contact the Webmaster directly to see if they can be resolved. Many times, a user will find a problem before the Webmaster or Moderator will see it. Learning about problems early, prevents a total melt down...

Sorry, I meant this one:

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7188

The title is "compressor test" and I would think you should get this exact thread, if anything, from the search results, no?

If not, when people are searching for stuff they're not going to find everything...that is, if the title is meaningful.

When I search for "compressor" only, I STILL don't get the thread back...something has to be wrong here....

I believe that the search feature only searches the text of the posts, not the titles. As for searching for single words, why it isn't returning any results, I can't say. My comments are limited to the working knowledge that I have of the more recent versions of the software. Each version has its own quirks and idiosyncrasies. Each upgrade fixes these problems as they become known and sometimes presents new problems in exchange for the old ones..

Ugh...That would be bad if you could not search the titles.

Considering some of the titles of the threads, that is a good thing. Most titles don't properly convey what the post is about, so you have to open and read it to learn what the topic is.
