Anyone Here Ever Hire an Architect/Engineer/Designer Through Elance?

Or a similar website? I've been researching the idea for my upcoming 20'x40' detached self-build and I'm tempted to do it. The design is pretty basic but having professional drawings and 3D renders done for roughly a couple hundred bucks is very attractive.

Boyd,

I have had CAD drawings, mechanical engineering work, general research, and business logos done through elance and odesk. My experiences have been positive. A couple thoughts:
1. A Good Write Up - Some of the $ savings will be traded for your time. You will need to spend time thinking through, and then very clearly writing, what it is you want. Some people on elance and odesk communicate via phone and skype but otherwise it will be email. Can someone unfamiliar with your project, do exactly what you want with your written description? Sending your write-up to a friend or colleague who doesn't know about your project might be a way to start.

2. Trial Run - It depends on the work you need done, but I have friends who use elance and odesk daily and before they move with a big project, they have people bid on and complete a small, sometimes fake/useless project. It is 'real' work for the people bidding, and they get paid for the work, it just doesn't really matter to my friends. This lets them see people's work ethic and style on something cheap that doesn't matter before they say go on the bigger project.

3. Building Codes - My work requests didn't have to meet any regulations, but yours will. You will need to ensure those parameters are being met. This might mean U.S. only vendors. You can specify that fact, but it does limit who responds and raises that rates.

For me, my experiences have been totally positive and also, not to get sappy, really heartwarming. I think it is so cool that people around the world are hard-working, honest, creative, and want to bid on projects.

Good luck, Brett

I have both hired and been hired through Elance. My experience has also been positive. Brett has excellent advice above. The only thing I'd add is that I like to have a skype call or at least a phone call during the vetting process. If someone is serious about running a business then that won't be an issue for them and it helps get the lines of communication flowing early in the process.

Brett - Thank you for sharing your experience with hiring freelance design work. The advice you gave is excellent and I'll make sure to heed it. I completely understand your 'heartwarming' comment. I was very pleasantly surprised to see how professional, competitive, and geographically diverse the offerings were.

APEowner - I like the idea of a skype call. Very good advice, as well. Thanks.

I got some floor plans drawn up through elance and it went very well. I don't have the time or patience to learn a CAD tool and they brought a fresh perspective to the space which I couldn't have done.

I didn't put my work up for bid. I found a few people whose portfolio I liked and the first one I made an offer to was the one I ended up using. It may have been a bit more expensive that way but I'm happy with product and the price I paid.

I've been using Elance alot the last 3-4 years. My advice would be to know what you are looking for, and dont go for the cheapest route. On Elance, you often do get what you pay for.

If you hire a company, make sure you have direct contact (skype) to the guy who is actualy doing the asssignment.

I use/used it for software development and the usual logo's and stuff. I have hired really good people there, and really bad.

If possible, steer away from India. They have not learned how to think for themselves. If you ask them to design a round square, they will do so, no questions asked. When they return it wont be round, and it wont be square. But it will be something.. Something you cant use.
What im trying to say is that you need to know exactly what you want done. Steer away from the original plans and your budget slide.

I dont know about house planning/design. But in software i learned it was almost impossible to think everything through fully.

And dont make the final payment or especially the review of their work until the work is DONE.. This should be common sense though:)

Good luck

Question: currently working on my job request for elance. Should I concern myself with converting standard measurements to metric or leave that to the bidders?

Thanks for bringing this site to my attention. Have some CAD stuff I need done coming up and don't have that skill set quite yet.

I have done some side work through Elance.

Be careful when using it. Many people will bid very little on your project and quite often you will get very little or nothing in return.

Edit:

I did offer my services.... but to be honest, my schedule is full.

The advice others gave above is very solid.

You should specify the units that your want the plans in as part of your job description. The person you hire should be able to work in whatever units you want.
