This is my first post and Im cusious to see if anyone here has attended any trade school for what they do.

I recently graduated From UTI and i did their Auto, Diesel and Industrial program, it was great. It really helped me get my foot in the doore, better than if I would of just walked in with what i already new from all the time spent at my dads shop.

I was just wondering if anyone else had gone to a school like that, and if you have do you think it did anything for you as far as getting you into a shop or wherever you work at.

Well have fun and keep wrenching..

I went to a state technical college for my A.S in Diesel Technology. It was a easy choice compared to UTI, NAD etc my 2 year degree was only 8 grand (Kansas pays most of the bill for instate technical college students). I was working for the local Pete dealer before I graduated so yes it helped get my foot in the door.

I went to aviation school and got my A&P license but unless your previous military, they no chance at a job. think about it, really not that many aviation mechanic jobs out there, when schools are turning out 300 mechanics every 90 days

Without some sort of verifiable schooling you're really no different than the next "uneducated" dude on the street, regardless of your real world experience.

Employers go to the schools in search of qualified employees. Why do you think that is?? It's because it's cheaper to seek out the diploma'd people than it is to sort out the rest of the general population. The diploma somewhat guarantees that the candidate has at least some idea of what they'll be facing when they get to work on that first day.

From 83 to 85 I attended an Electronics technology course. Right out of school I went to work for a major commercial and goverment aviation electronics company that had come to the school looking for employees. 24 years later I work for the same company.

Where do you think I would have been had I not gotten that 2 year education??

Can you get a job without the education?? Sure, your experience from your Dad's shop might have gotten you a job, probably with someone that you had connections with via your dad. However, what happens when that job goes away??
Can you find another job through the "friends and family plan"?? It's doubtful.

A diploma is transferable, you will carry that education with you forever.

I had a guy apply with the resume that his Dad was a mechanic for 28 yrs. I can usually tell if a guy has been to school or learned hands on or even in the backyard with Dad. I know a couple that got the talent, one Bud who is a fine mechanic but cant really teach anything real well, just never been thru formal training with a curriculum. Many never get a complete run down on a lot of fundamentals.

Went to college in '76, dropped out after 1 sem. was a waste of time,
went to tech school in '77, 2 yr prog, dropped out in '79, had a job at an employer doing what I was going to school for and he was offering apprentiship. No sense in going to school any more.
Worked at 5 different jobs in the next 15 yrs, all "engineering" jobs, quit all these jobs, not laid off or fired, beg, borrowed, cashed in all my life savings, put the house up for hock and bought a business in '94. Sold business in '08.
Retired at the ripe old age of 50.
Who says you need a formal education?
It all depends upon the individual more than the diploma.
