I’m a Jeep guy and I’m in the process to outfitting my garage to take on a project Jeep. I live in R.I. and found a great prospect in Tucson...a 1985 CJ7. Anyone in the Tucson area who knows a trusted mechanic who can take a look at this Jeep for me? See if it’s driveable, check out the overall condition etc? I of course would pay for their time. Thanks..

Joe

Any CJ7 of that era has probably been hacked. The main thing you will want to have him look for is that the engine, trans and transfer case are intact, and that there is no rust on it including the floors. The front seats were prone to breaking welds and collapsing as they were just foam over sheet metal migged in a few spots. If it is a manual trans they were really prone to breaking. A standard joke at the time was "do you have a zipper in the trans yet. If not put one in because you'll be in there a lot." I do miss mine (1982) but not the constant work on it. Warped exhaust manifolds were really bad, and the front axles wore out a lot. I had it almost 400,000 miles so it was rugged in many ways too. There is an excellent Jeep wrecking yard here in Sacto (J&W). I've known Jack Duncan for years. He is getting up there in years though.

If it is the one on CL I only noticed a couple things - there were no engine photos so one would want that to see how original it is, and there is a chock behind the right front tire for some reason. Maybe some parking brake issues or something? Don't remember seeing mileage in that ad either. I still have a rear axle hub puller for CJ7s. You'll need one if you ever go to replace the rear axle or seals. My rear axles had run out in them from the factory. Summer's Brother turned the faces for me and then it ran really smooth afterwards. Those hubs had a history of spinning on the axles. Summers Brothers had a solid axle that solved that especially for folks who were running V8's.

What do you mean by hacked? And yes it is the brown one on Craigslist lol. I asked for engine pics and he texted them to me. I also asked for a couple videos of it running and driving. He said he would send them.

I noticed the wheel chock to and it is a manual shift. Don’t know what’s up with that.

He said it had 147k miles on it.

Idk, looks pretty rust free which is hard to find in New England.

I’ll see if I can post the engine pics

He mentioned a couple times there was zero rust which I guess if it’s been in Tucson all this time it may be true as that’s where the aircraft boneyard is because of the extremely low humidity levels.

Can they send you a video with the engine running?

Also pics under the vehicle, especially the floorboards?

If it runs and has little to no rust then your are probably GTG if this is what you really want. The rest is just quality time with your new toy.

I bought the truck on my avatar in Utah. Drove it back to San Diego.

the engine looks stock. My 1982 had a dip stick on the side rather than the top pull thing. The hoses all look to be in the usual places. The head gaskets do leak sometimes and the intake valves all carbon up so bad the engine can't breathe on some, but I would think that it will be as good as any you find. Haven't followed CJ prices. Has a soft top so it will have seen more sun than a hard top but if you want a soft top, it will be Ok. I would expect any car of that age to have deferred maintenance. You should be able to find someone who can look it over. Just make sure it has a clean AZ title and not a Mexico title.
