Anyone Know about LCD T.V.s?

I am having a problem with my Westinghouse 42" adjusting the image position.

I know they are consumer electronics, and all consumer electronics today is disposable. Usually you are better off junking malfunctioning consumer electronics and buying new.

But I would go out and Google the model number and the problem. Others may have had the same issue and there are sites out there dedicated to repairing electronics, etc.

I agree on the disposable nature of T.V.s, stereos, microwave ovens, etc. that all comes from China nowadays. This was given to me by a friend because the DVD player had quit. Hell, I still have a tube T.V. sitting behind this one! Replacing with new is WAY out of the budget, I have a dozen other projects. I wanted to search by model number but I can't move the thing by myself to see the back. I was hoping I might luck out and get some quick easy answer.

Do you mean that the picture is too big for the screen (or too small)?

I had this happen and there is an orientation button. Mine was adjusted through the # sign in the remote and it had 3 settings that it runs through. Took me a while to figure out why the sports scores are not showing up at the bottom of the screen in the bedroom.

If that is the issue, look up adjust orientation.

The right side of the screen has a black strip about 2" wide, and on the left side, when my laptop is hooked up, one vertical row of icons is missing, so I'm guessing about the same. It had about double that, and I adjusted it to where it is now with the orientation control, and another setting, maybe clocking? Possibly there is another setting I didn't find?

If picture is not in proper horizontal or vertical position, there might be "Menu" option for setup (ie with the original remote that came with TV) so you could get to those settings - - - ie like in the old days (or on tube computer monitors) where there were knobs for vertical sizing control and horizontal sizing control.

However, for size itself it might be "Zoom" setting that sets the ratio.

I've got digital converter and old tube TV to watch OTA and zoom button on remote easily switches the ratio to take up full screen as some stations come in with funky shape.

It might be something to do with your input. Are you using VGA or HDMI/DVI.

Try your display settings in your laptop. Does the TV work with your cable box or dvd player? Sometimes there's also an HD zoom on the remote/menu.

Not sure what the exact problem is.

All I have hooked up to it so far is the laptop with a VGA cable. I did try changing the display settings on the laptop, but really it is just a case of, the laptops display is fine, and it's image on the T.V. is shifted 2" past the "image adjustmet" setting function. I haven't tried hooking up the DVD palyer yet, and I don't have cable T.V. or an antennae. The main reason I wanted it was for web surfing and watching instructional Youtube videos while in bed. I have some health issues that have given me a lot of "down time" lately. I'll look for the "zoom" setting, thanks for all the help.

The laptop video out for the monitor should have different settings independent from the laptop display. When I hook up my laptop to my big screen LCD TV I have a separate setting function for monitors to make the image fit.

The zoom is the likely culprit. It drove me nuts the first time I hooked my laptop to my TV and parts were cut off.

Then I realized It was zoomed in one click. Zoomed out and it was perfect.

If "zoom" is not the culprit.

Then go to 'Setup' --> 'V-POS' to adjust the vertical position or 'H-POS' to adjust the horizontal position.

It should be set to 50 by default.

Not knowing if the tv itself is the culprit, look in your laptops video settings.
Depending on the model and video driver there should be the basic choices for the video output to the secondary monitor as well as some more advanced settings for overscan that will allow you to tweak how it fits the screen.

DrunkSmurf is right. I totally forgot about the laptop as being the culprit.

Are you setting the output of the laptop graphics to the TV only? Are you cloning the laptop display and the TV?

What's the resolution of the graphics card on the laptop? Sometimes the resolution of the card isn't able to output the video on the TV perfectly fitting everything.

It's really hard to help when there aren't images of the problem you're seeing.

yea, I've seen that many times with mismatched screens between laptops and projectors and TVs. It sounds like the laptop is a 4:3 standard ratio screen and the TV is a 16:9 widescreen. I'd guess 90% of laptops more than 2 years old don't either have enough graphics processing power or the gfx card isn't programmed to be able to run run different resolutions and you generally can't regardless of power in screen duplicate mode. since you say the line of icons is missing, I'm guessing you do have it in screen duplicate mode.

You MIGHT be able to get around it by switching modes so the laptop screen is off and ONLY running the TV along with setting the right aspect ratio resolution for the TV. That's why Video cables and signals have changed since the days of VGA cables...the VGA cable and software isn't as cross-compatible and adaptable. Also why almost everything runs widescreen now.

if your laptop has an ATI video chipset, you may want to get the newest drivers and make sure you have the Catalyist Control Center ( CCC.exe) now called the AMD Vision control center still uses the CCC.exe anyway go into there, try the various settings will likely be Under " My Digital Flat-panel " there is your Overdrive settings, to make the picture larger or smaller, and also in the CCC, there is a utility in there to allow screen positioning up down and left right, that should fix the problem.

Now if you have the Nvidea chipset, it has a very similar control panel but I forget the name of it, someone else may need to chime in here.

most likely thou if you bought the laptop for price and performace it will have a AMD chip and that means ATI graphics ( they are now the same company thrue buy outs ) .

also you dont need the TV remote to try checking the V and H sync on the TV, just use the Menu button on either the side or bottom of TV, and then usually the Volume up and down buttons to move to different options and settings, ( rarely have I seen Channel up / down used for this ).

It may be a zoom, format, pic size button on the remote also I would be trying to set the screen resolution on the computer. Assuming the computer isnt windows 8 you should be able to right click an empty area of the desktop and its either properties or screen resolution depending on the version of windows. Hope this helps

Specifically with your laptop settings, your timing might be outside the range of what the TV can display correctly. You can try a different (lower)resolution, or try adjusting the refresh rate.

I'd look at the refresh rate first. 60 should work, if it's set to 70 or 75, that might be what is giving the TV fits.
