Anyone know about Rohm chucks?

My buddy has a Rohm chuck that he's having difficulty with. He strongly suspects that the shank in it has the incorrect taper to fit the chuck correctly.

The chuck has the following on it:

1/8 - 5/8 ROHM SPIRO 3-16 B 16

Anyone have an idea?

Why doesn't he check the model's specs against a chuck that is known to fit his drill?

He's trying to get it fitted up to his Bridgeport mill.

The runout when he mounts it up is just nuts. So he reasons that the shank in it is of the incorrect taper.

He's got no other chucks to fit up.

The chuck probably has a B16 taper.

I'm not overly familiar with taper sizes but I think the B16 and other B tapers are a DIN standard usually found on European machines.

According to this article on Wikipedia, a bridgeport is likely to use an R8 taper.

You may be able to get an adapter.

Here is a page that shows most or all of the spindle tapers available for the different Bridgeport heads. The B-16 taper is not included. If his BPort has an R8 taper, he can maybe find an adapter on eBay. They do exist. If not, all bets are off.

Talked to my buddy last night. Said he made a 'proof of concept' adapter out of aluminum that turned out real well; so he made a better one out of steel that worked better.

Now he's hunting (which means dragging me to the scrap yard) for a piece of stainless.

Stainless steel alloys are known for "galling". I'm not overly familiar with what alloys taper adapters are usually made from, but galling might be an issue for a taper adapter.

4140PH is a good material for shop-made spindle tooling. It's hard enough to resist most careless dents and damage but soft enough at 28-32 RC to be machinable.

Update: The buddy took the info I provided and visited a friend of his that owns a mchine shop. Got a piece of stainless, made his adapter and got very close. Took it back to the shop to have it 'fine tuned' ... turned out quite excelllent. He's very happy. Thanks to all for the advice/info!
