I have a blue rectangular hazet/vw tool box and trying to locate the tool or find out more info on the tool pictured below (27 mm??? hex socket). Borrowed the pictures from another site (is that allowed) because having trouble uploading. The brochure translates as "This liner is designed for the on-board tool located in your car". The tin has VW on top but don't know of any vw car supplied tools with this one present. Checked on the samba website, some info there but not much. I am starting to wonder if this type of tool box was produced for another car brand as well (just change tins) and it catered for something out of these. Any info (or location of tool itself) would be greatly appreciated

I don't know. I would guess axle but, but it's really thin. Maybe an emergency socket for sunroof or convertible top operation?

The best place I know to research old Hazet is thesamba. Did you ask there as well?

I've only ever owned watercooled VWs, but the first thing that popped into my mind was the giant hex on the 020 ******. I forget what size it is, and it's not torqued down very tight.

Maybe for the protective cover nut over the wheel bearings? Not a VW fan, but those cups are common on older european cars, so likely on the beetle too. Tire iron goes through the holes, undo the cup and adjust wheel bearings?!

The square tool kit was offered as an accessory in VW dealerships in 1970-71. Here are a couple of pictures of a complete kit.

Top Tray (includes tools which came with the car originally)

Bottom Tray (the Hazet beer opener did not come wit the kit, but was a 1970 promotional item offered by Hazet dealers)

The big hex socket in the top tray was used to adjust the worm-and-roller steering boxes (did not work for Super Beetle, which came out in 1971).

Very cool kit!

Cool for a display item, but close to useless for doing any real work. The Hazet tools in the kit were fragile and broke easily. Wood handles separated from screwdrivers, plastic handles deteriorated and broke free from valve adjuster and hubcap puller, etc. Most of the plastic trays were splintered years go.

:shocking:

Brutal, especially considering what those hubcap kits sell for on ePay...

In fairness, I have to say that the tools in the round 'hubcap' kit were slightly less worthless.

The channel-locks were OK for removing twist-off caps on small bottles.

Hey, that's my hand! :)
from this thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=210132

"hexagonal, made of steel, about 20mm tall, with a 27mm i.d., 32mm o.d. on two of the sides (opposite of eachother) there are holes for the tommy bar to pass through"

Thanks for the use of your pictures.

Did the sockets come in any beetle/vw supplied tool rolls/kits (or do you have spare ones or two you want to sell :) ) Picture of my tool kit is in this thread.

I like the beer opener as well.
