Anyone know what this is called? I have Googled almost every combination and synonym I can think of. It is a clip that holds the chain on a 5 gallon General - US Metal Can (Blitz) - Jerry Can circa 1980's and 1990's before CARB forced EPA to change to plastic caps.

It goes thru the chain link and into about a 1/8" hole.

I'd call that about 5 minutes of work with a piece of spring wire and a couple of needle nose pliers.

I was thinking either the Fiat part or some piano wire and needle nose pliers, probably the latter considering that I owned a couple Fiats in years past & I do think that part looks a lot alike but the thickness is much more on the Fiat part. I thought maybe there might be a commercial name for that type fitting. Re: key ring - the hole is in the middle of a steel plate that is part of the can. It has to be something that fits into the hole. A cotter pin would work but there are occasions when one wants to easily pull the cap off so it doesn't scratch paint on a car.

You can see in these photos how it connects.

I would call that a "spring clip" or "retainer clip" but that is certainly generic.

Once the context is removed, it's pretty hard to dig through the millions of spring clips to buy one, and so I guess there are a lot of them that aren't available separately. no retail outlet would want that job.

^ I have been sitting here wondering how long it was going to take for someone to suggest it's just a hairpin clip that's saving it until she's married.

(Glad to know I'm not the only one around here whose mind lives in the gutter.)

Looks like a similar thing to a door panel retaining clip. Auceco makes a gazillion variations on this theme, if it doesn’t need to be exact.

If you do want it to be exact, you can probably bend a few up in less time than it takes to read this post.

Thank you all. The links are helping. I made one of piano wire I had but it is too thin and pulls right out too easily. Will have to get some .040" piano wire and try again.

Now that I see better pictures, how close to the original design do you need to be?

Should be lots of options that would work.

As an architect myself, it's important to distinguish between architect's and engineer's scale.
1/8, 1/4, 3/16, etc for architect's drawings
1/10, 1/20, 1/30, etc for civil engineer's drawings.
And don't forget my metric versions for both architect's and engineer's scales.
Yes, all are used in drafting (old-school), if your not using CAD.
Remember, contractors, do not scale the drawings with a tape measure; that's why we put dimensions on the drawing. That's also why it's fun sometimes to draw in 3/32"=1'-0" scale. 😆

Kinda similar to what we used to call a "Jesus clip" possibly called an external hitch pin

Call Tacoma Screw in the morning and see if you can email them a photo of the object and somebody might be able to identify it.

that looks like a winner. I see some already that a little tweak would work. Thank you. And thank you all, every reply is read and appreciated.

Looks like you could just tie a piece of wire through the small hole and back through the large opening in the top of the picture. No reason to spend a bunch of time overthinking it

yes, wire was there and I cut it off. A small cotter pin works easy too but it would be nice some day to clean the two cans, repaint them and have the hardware match rather than look rigged.

Looks good to me especially from the manufacturer's point of view. Way faster to push that into position than mess around w/ a key ring type clip.
