It was connected between the old gas valve and the radiator and has the gas nozzle threaded into it. Looks like some kind of expansion chamber or something.

Natural or propane gas? it's a gas manifold for a one burner heater or stove, the plug would be for a pressure test port. there would be a burner assembly with an air shutter to mix gas and air so it burns properly. Not sure why there is a radiator? a heat exchanger or ????? tt

Regardless of LP of NG I would say its the gas manifold and the port is where you would hook a monometer(I think I spelled that right) to adjust your gas pressure so you can get a good gas to air mix for a clean burn. Did you have a 2 stage gas valve?

When we add a turndown valve to gas HVAC units we add ports like that to adjust the low fire and high fire for clean burns. For those who don't know a what a clean burn is, its where you adjust the fuel/air mix to get you CO down and your NOX to manageable levels.

Thanks for the replies, let me clarify my request, I just looked back and realized my original question wasn't worded well (gotta stop typing in the middle of the night).

Yes, it's a gas manifold from a NG wall heater (old one). Specifically I'm wondering why the black part is necessary as opposed to just connecting a gas line directly up to the brass nozzle. Is the manifold itself serving a specific purpose other than acting as a connection point for the nozzle (and potentially a spot for the test port)?

The shape made me think it was acting as some kind of expansion chamber and not just as a fitting.
