Anyone know what this tool is?

My friend bought a tool box full of tools in a garage sale and this tool was in the box. What is this tool? And what is it used for?

It looks like a belt tension tool or pulley holding tool with the square drive to use a ratchet or breaker bar at the top.
Any name or numbers stamped on it?

EDIT nope, its been so long since Ive seen one I forgot what they look like. The pwr str tool is much shorter

I would agree with above guesses. Looks like the end of it hooks into the fins or a hole on an alternator or pump and you use a ratchet to rotate the alternator on the pivot bolt and then tighten the bracket. I've always just used a pry bar to leverage the alt or pump and then tighten the bracket bolt. If I had to guess I would say it was made by lisle or KD tools, maybe rebranded by others.

Thexton used to make some of as well I don't see that one their site
IF I remember right there is the one model of Chrysler that the alt. needed a similar tool long like that to adjust the belt tension.

Could be some kind of spanner wrench too. I can see that being used to loosen/tighten the spanners on a GM 14 bolt to set backlash and side load.

Definitely looks like a spanner to me. Much larger than what I use on my bike and four wheeler shocks though. LOL

What ever it is for it looks like it was made for one purpose. It looks like it is made to have clearance around something where it is used. I have seen them in the past and wondered what they were for. It looks like a tool that comes with a machine. They send out cheap tools that are never stamped with machinery. It looks like it was made for a quick change on something. I am not convinced it is an automotive tool

It's an alternator belt tool. I have one in my tool box. Handy for when you can't get a pry bar past the alternator to tighten the belt. It grabs either the cooling fins or the case bolt bosses (on Delco alternators). The 8 point opening is so you can re-position the breaker bar to get a better pull.

That's a Lisle 12400 for hooking onto alternators to pull the alternator over for increasing the tension on the accessory drive belt.

That's a Lisle 12400 for hooking onto alternators to pull the alternator over for increasing the tension on the accessory drive belt.

It's used on the GM 3.8 V-6's from 80's and 90's; it would probably fit a GNX as well.
