Let me guess are you testing the stator on an outboard motor? 
BTDT many times over. 
I built all the ones I have. Super simple circuit, < $5 in parts. I can draw you a schematic if you would like. There are a few companies that build them, CDI for one. They are ~$50. Most of the larger online boat stores sell them.
