Infrequent poster here, but love finding all the great info on GJ- has helped me out with numerous projects. I've been trying to build my meager shop through buying large lots,(full toolboxes, etc...) and keeping what I want/need and selling the rest off- which generally works well. My issue is toolboxes piling up; see my other posts- I have Snap On bottom boxes and 1 topbox- all single bank. My 'local area' is pretty poor and not many people want to pay even halfway decent money for SO boxes- shipping is expensive as hell- making everyone who wants them to pay 50%-75% of the box price for shipping.

Long story short,(irony) is that I'm thinking the best option may be to part them out and sell off the emblems, casters, handles, locks, keys, slides, drawers, trim, etc.... and then make something cool out of the cabinets, maybe a few drawers, etc..... I'm thinking kegerator, office desk,(1 on each side and wood top), firearm storage, etc.... Please share your opinions, and/or suggestions or ideas for projects. Also let me know if you need parts for boxes you are working on or need parts for; model #s are KRL656, KR650 and KR655.

Thanks and happy new year!

First off if you are in AZ, NM, near AZ cali border i would consider buying some off you.

Secondly the Office desk would be what I would do because you would not be altering the boxes too much if any to get them to work. Tool boxes really aren't the most secure place for fire arms(I keep them in mine but know I should invest in a safe).

You could also make a oversized road box and carry frame with your top box. For those help a buddy over a weekend projects.

Out of curiosity what do you think your KR650 and 655 are worth? quick description of condition would be cool too.

First were are you?
Second, have you thought about a road trip
Perhaps you could find some buyers in an area not too far away and then take a little vacation to deliver them

Build some shelves inside and use them as base cabinets

ANother option would be to use the small skinny drawers in place of the deeper ones to get the same effect. this is what I would do if i was to use the box as storage. The notches inside of the box would kind of bug me though from an ascetic point of view and i wouldn't delete them either you never know what you may need to sell in the future.

Sounds like it is time to load the boxes and make a road trip.... Use them as a trade in for a good compressor, large floor jack, welder, grinder, blast cabinet or something you can use. Find a shop equipment dealer who is willing to deal. Used single bank Snap-On boxes should not be hard sellers if priced within reason..

The problem with selling parts off equipment is that once a few common parts are sold, you are stuck with incomplete, unusable equipment.. May be stuck with that for a long time...

If you had a defined use for the gutted out cabinets, that would bring things into some different light.

I'm in Las Cruces, NM which is about 4 hours due east of tucson, or 3 hours south of Albuquerque. I would certainly consider half-way roadtrips or something to meet someone, but I've got so much work and BS going on it's hard to get away for more than a day or so. In fact, I would suggest anyone into it, and with time on their hands to come down here- high of 65, low of 35 through the week!!!
Thanks for the Ideas, and I hear everyone on the 'once you part it out....' side too. I'm pretty torn because I wish I could keep all of them and do a good refurb, but finances and girlfriend say no- it's just that shipping, and/or coordinating with people who aren't flaky is hard to do. Maybe mentioning the weather here will help with that.

Take this with a grain of salt, but quite honestly I think the issue with not selling your boxes is that the prices are pretty high for the condition they are in and the local competitive market. That KR650/655 is going to need LOTS of work, and remember that the box warranty does not technically apply to anyone but the original owner. If the purchaser has to replace the slides on their own dime they are looking at a very hefty sum of cash. Figure ~$80 per drawer. Add that to the asking price, factor in the effort and time needed to do it. It just adds up to too much and exceeds the box value.

The 656's again seem pretty high for what they are. These are knida a in between box. Meaning the market is pretty limited. You are pretty much limited to a serious DIY person. Not many pros want a box that small these days, and while many DIY folks respect the SO name, they quite simply can't justify the cost over a HF box. Additionally the one, although only one drawer, is technically broken.

Parting them out is going to be a big mistake IMHO. I think it is going to take a long time to get much money back. Shipping is going to be a pain, and then your re purposed cabinets are really not going to be that great.

Do as you would like, but I think the market has spoken on them so to say. Either low the prices, fix them up or use them for yourself.

Am I missing something here? Nowhere did the OP mention the condition of the box or supply a photo
