Anyone make a work top for their Harbor Freight 44" Box?

Buy a butcher block slab from ikea and make a solid top for it.

I bought a glued up project panel at lowes and installed it on top of my 44" box. I use it all the time, just do not hammer on it much.

I was going to buy the ikea top for mine but they were out at the time I wanted it.
A friend gave me a piece of shelving that was Formica covered that was almost the right size.
I just trimmed it down and reglued the one Formica edge back on it and it has worked perfect

It's a sears box but I used butcher block counter top from Menards on it. It's the perfect height to work on stuff

Yep.. my father in law is a retired master carpenter and made one for my birthday last year. It's oak, and has been a very nice surface. I can't remember what he said he spent in materials, but it was under 100.00 bucks. I snap a pic when I get home

That's actually really nice. My buddy has a 44" hf box and he was thinking of the side cab. I actually thought of a big butcher block and notching it on the underside where the end/side cab is.
Nice to see someone do my envision!

heres what i did

I made one out of some 1/2" maple ply I had leftover from a project. Oil and wax finish. I did it only for a smooth surface, not for any hard daily use.

I used a piece of 3/4" birch plywood I had left over from another project. Cut to fit and polyurethaned it.

Yes just measured it out and used a circular saw to cut out the notch on the bottom. This was an old used butcher block with some wear on it so I cut it down to size and re-finished it. It's maple wood with some "red oak" stain from Minwax on it.

Out of curiosity are you just looking for the mobility facor? My only reason for not doing just a top was because I wanted the extra work space and didn't want to be banging on the tool chest causing stuff inside to be thrown around.

I cannot wait to move my 56" into my new (to me) shop area at the house. I will hopefully have room to add another 56", a 44", or at least 2 of those side cabinets. Then I'm doing this!!

I got the 44" over the 56" for more drawers to separate tools by type and metric vs SAE. The sides are also great for added categorized drawer space

That was my original plan, but the wider drawers were not quite wide enough for my needs (aside from the top). I will most likely be adding another 44". I think that will fit perfectly, with a side cabinet on the other side of the 56" if possible.

I'm in a 200-year-old house with no garage, and we are slowly renovating, so the shop will have to move several times during this process. This will be the first move, and I have to tear a room down to the dirt floor and rebuild it before it is ready. Then I can move my shop out of the old gutted kitchen it's been in for the last decade, which is becoming part of our new kitchen. Eventually it will move again when my garage gets built, hopefully for the last time!
