I have been looking to add a hitch receiver to my workbench so I can temporarily mount a bench grinder, vice etc. Looking at the dimensions of my vice and monting the receiver horizontally beneath my workbench top, it looks like the vice/tool receiver will stick out 18". This seems like it would be in the way when working on a project.
Now I am thinking about mounting the receiver vertical on the front inside edge of my workbench. Has anyone done this? It seems like it would work better mounted this way. It would not protrude outside of the edge of the bench and not be bouncy when hammering on it. Then when the vice is stored I could insert a block attached to a small square of 3/4 inch plywood into the female receiver in the workbench to cover the opening. Please post pictures if you have this setup or let me know your thoughts (is there a downside to monting the receiver vertically).

Yup, did it a few years ago. I mount my polisher into it. Works good.
Welded the receiver piece onto a plate and bolted it under my bench flush with the edge of the bench. Made up a plate to bolt the polisher onto and welded the slide in tube to the plate. Slide it in and I put a bolt through it, you could use a pin and clip to hold it in place.

don't know what your using for a bench, but if it's wood you could cut out a hole and mount the reciever below grade, have a cover for the hole

got pics?
