Laphroaig, even for a long-time scoth drinker, tasted like cough syrup at first. By the end of the bottle, I had grown to enjoy it, not enough to buy any more though. But, enough to enjoy it if someone else has it on hand.
Lagavulin 16 is very good, it will serve to demonstrate what 'peaty' means when discussing scoth flavors. Love it, love it, love it.
My go to scotch is blended: Johhny Black. The blue is too expensive, but interesting. Also keep Glenfiddich 12, MacCallan 12 on hand. Used to like Knockando, haven't seen it at my local store lately. Used to love Cardhu (an ingrediant in Johnny Black, I believe they by all Cardhu for prodcution of the black.
edit: followed the link above, seems like Cardhu is back (many years since I've enjoyed any!!!).
Glenlivet is now a crappy scocth that does not deserve its reutation (earned due to a decades long ad campaign after the Seagrams group bought the name). I see ordering Glenlivet as evidence that one does not have knowledge of scotch.
My dad taught me to enjoy bourbon, and I believe regular Jim Beam to be smooth and delicious. Have Maker's for guests. Jack Daniels is cheap corn-liquor with an undeserved reputation (suspect this position not popular with much of the GJ crowd).
I have just started to enjoy fine tequilas; they may be smoother than scotch, pick up Herradura Anejo for cheap on sale, it is pretty damn smooth, have enjoyed many other tequilas at bars, wasn't that impressed with Patron (bartender said Herradura is the poser tequila; goes to show that beauty is the mouth of the sipper).
Grey Goose for guests, and the occaisonal vodka martini.
