In planning my garage reno, I have decided to go with grey, black, red and white as my colors. Got a nice looking theme, but it's "safe" and predictable I guess.

Thought about getting a little crazy and trying to paint a "highlight" wall. Basically the wall you see when you pull in I thought about doing the 5150 guitar paint theme, made famous by Eddie Van Halen.

Thoughts/suggestions? Am I whacked out of my mind? Any templates out there for doing such a beast? Guessing I would start wit red as my base coat, and then lay out the white stripes and finally the black stripes.

Bad *** guitar...but not sure I can pull off that paint scheme.

Vai = Whitesnake...."and here I go again on my own....going down the only road I've ever known...like a drifter, i was born to walk alone..."

Yes, I know, he was with Roth too in the mid-late 80's. A great guitarist! I just don't get a chance to whip out Whitesnake lyrics everyday. I love 70's and 80's rock. Maybe I should change my name to Joe Dirt. I have a Challenger....Mopar or no car!

For the paint - start with the lightest color as the base.

Start with white as the base, tape off the stripes. Then (since the black looks like it is very minimal - you can either paint the stripe areas black and then tape them off. Then go over the entire wall with a couple coats of the red. Remove tape and boom done.

A tip for nice lines - once the tape is down, take a small brush and paint over the edge, moving perpendicular to the tape going from the tape to the wall. This will help seal the tape edge.

I played around with my CAD a little laying out the wall. Not entirely happy with it. But this gives a rough idea. Hard to see here, but the black blob is where I have some built in floor to ceiling shelves. I will put doors on them with silver pulls for a little dress up. Also, later down the road, I would like to get 5150...or maybe Garage 5150 cut out of stainless and put on the doors. Maybe even find a way to put some red neons behind the stainless.

I also have (2) doors on that wall. The one in the Frankenstrat scheme is my utility door to the hot water tank and water cut off. The white door is one of the entry from my 2 car bay into the house (thinking this may look better black instead of white).

Also, at the top I have a black border about 6". I could leave that off this wall, but it will be on the other walls.

Feel free to rip me apart, lol.

I don't think it will brighten up the shop, but I love the idea! Eddie has been my favorite guitarist for as long as I remember. Everyone argues about who the best singer was, I say who cares, as long as Eddie plays guitar! Here is my tribute I did a few years ago.

being from the 80's....like the idea and evh

But...I think...after awhile i'd go cross eyed looking at that wall size. But it does look cool! But wonder if i wouldn't go bonkers after awhile.

I love it man. Don't get hung up on exactness...that is an immediately identifiable pattern, IMO. Good stuff.

If anyone is still interested...I did it! We built a small wine cellar in our garage and decided to replicate the Frankenstrat design on the outside, just for fun. First coat over wallboard was high gloss black--two coats. We used four thicknesses of painter's tape; got Tamiya tape for the thinner lines. Then did a coat of gray primer, taped off just a couple of lines. Finished with three coats of eggshell white. I think it turned out pretty nicely! (Please note, pic always posts upside down, fsr.)
