Anyone put their workbench on caster wheels?

Everything is on wheels here.

Workbench has floor jack wheels on the rear, a cross member in the front for a jack. A really stable setup.

This is good, simple.

My bench is on casters as is my fridge (I built a solid platform to raise it up and allow for easier movement vs. the fridge wheels). This system works great for the 10 year clean outs that occur.

The only things not mobile in my garage is gonna be the built in bench and the compressor.

Everything But the bench and the overhead cupboards will be headed to the next place if we ever go that route.

I put HDPE feet on my table. I throw a sling around the legs and can drag it where I want it. It has worked out pretty well

My floor is sloped so needed to shim up my workbench to be flat - anything on wheels is automatically out of square. Frustrating, but the reality of my garage.

I have a reworked Craftsman sheetmetal workbench on flip-up casters. Replaced the top with one made from 2x3 and 2x4 face laminated, topped with 3/4” plywood. Made feet for the corners using square tube, bolts for adjustability, and hockey pucks. Combined with the flip-up casters, it’s easy to move, and rock solid when parked.

I use the Harbor Freight rolling tool base under my workbench. I had to lengthen it to fit. I am pleased with the results.

Which Craftsman workbench do you have? Do you have a picture? Is there an older post which shows how you constructed the top and the leg/caster modifications?

I've got 4 work benches and a high top bar all on 5" locking casters. Easy to move around and create a giant work table.

It was the worst thing for me. I had a 8" Snap-On (Wilton) vise (with serrated jaws) on it and the bench was only used for a table. It was too tall and moved if I cranked down on the vise. I cut the heavy duty castors off, mounted the bench to the floor and wall, got smooth jaws for my vise and have been happy ever since.

I have been putting casters on everything in my shop. All of my benches have them and my new bench will have them too. I put casters on my sander too.

They are swivel casters and lock the wheel and swivel. They’re $40 for an eight pack of 5” casters from amazon (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B083V652YY/?tag=atomicindus08-20). I think I’ve ordered three sets of them.

Here are some photo of my benches with casters. In total they’ll be 4’x8’. Two that are 2’x4’ and one that is 4’x4’. I have toggle clamps to hold them together if needed.

I made this for a HFT media blast cabinet, benchtop size. The casters are 400 lbs. rated, it's probably 1/10 of that w/the cabinet. I made the vertical 2x4's so my arms naturally-slip-into the glove sleeves. The top 2x4 box is rabbeted 3/4" X 1-1/2" around the inside perimeter to fit the HFT media blaster cabinet. The casters are BORA brand, 1/8" steel, well-built, the 3/4" plywood is sandwiched between two pieces of steel triangles, it seems to be a good design, and the rubber leg pad helps to control the location, with the swivel casters disengaged.

I'm considering making another to hold hand power tools and toolboxes, maybe something 18" X 24" X 60" H, with 3 internal shelves, and a 1" X 2" around three sides of the top, to prevent anything falling-off. I'm also thinking of a buss strip for power, to place charging stations on it. Maybe some large-dia. PVC tubes to hold cordless drills & etc screwed horizontally to the bottom of a higher shelf, or the top shelf.

Depending on your needs, you could also cover the sides with metal, plywood, or masonite.

Got a fixed one, with a bench grinder, arbor press, ....
and one on wheels when working on my cars. Large castors, easy to roll around, rather high (I'm well over 6 ft), not as stable as a fixed one (e.g. I can't bend steel on it), but for those type of activities there is a fixed working place. The table weighs in at 150 - 200 lbs, so not flimsy, but large steel wheels and a polished concrete floor makes it very easy to roll around.

I use mine almost exclusively for automotive work, very happy so far. The advantage of having a workbench always nearby far outweighs the need for a stable, fixed bench in most cases.

I did casters with leveling feet. When the leveling casters are screwed up the wheels work.
