I think that might be pattern makers vise. The hole is a pivot to adjust the up/down angle.

What is the hole for in the 'versa-vise'? Is it for a post base that lets you just lift it up and flip it on it's side?
Edit: Found a vid that answered my question. I guessed right (only because I'd seen a sideways vise that looked like that before), but that's only part of what this vise can do. Interesting! :
