Anyone recognize this?

Another find in a misc. box of tools.
it looks like it has been dipped in thick paint over heavy rust, so there are no markings to be found. I haven't tried to strip it down, and not sure if there would be anything left if i did.

My grandfather painted superstructures (buildings, bridges, etc.) and I remember seeing a tool like that when I was very young. So I'm guessing it's a paint can opener. Hammer head to re-close cans? Slip the tool through a hole in the ladder and hang the paint can from the little hook? I'd be interested in buying it from you.

Thanks for the answers. It might be kinda small to be much. It's only about 9" long and the nail puller ends are so small, I'm not sure the would work on anything but tiny, tiny brads. I found a couple pictures of the same tool online, but nothing that identifies what it is.
I've got it soaking in Evaporust to see what is under the rust.

I came across one of those a couple years back. If it’s similar to the one I found, it’s only about a foot long and too light duty to do much with.

Thanks for all the replies. I think it is really to lite weight to be a crate opener tool.
It’s only about 9” long and the hammer face is 1/2” across.
The paint tool idea is growing on me.

I found out today, that the auction this came from, was a retired veterinarian.After quite a bit of research, i found that a lot of the other tools in the box lot were medical and horseshoe related in nature. What i thought were strange pliers are actually dental tools. Including the trocars, I asked about in another thread.
So i'm thinking this may be horseshoeing or vet related somehow.

I think this might be a winner! Looking that up found this exact item as one of the search results. It makes sense as a cigar box crate would be small, and not need a massive tool to open it.

This looks to be one of several crate openers from back in the the day. Yours is more ornate and perhaps older. I have one similar called "The ******" which is 9" long. I'll try to find a photo of it but here's a write up on it:

VINTAGE BRIDGEPORT HDWE MFG. CO.*THE ****** HAMMER CRATE NAIL PULL PRY BAR. PAT'D APRIL 1914 WARRANTED TOOL STEELMADE IN USA,BRIDGEPORT CONN. Measures 9 -3/8" long with a hammer head length of 3" with 3/4" hammer faces.

OK, here's a photo and catalog page. This does look more like you'd expect a crate bar to look like but they were quite small.

Thanks for all the replies. I’ve seen it being sold as cigar box opener, and as a carpet stretcher. Whatever it is, I think the fun part of something obscure like this, is I may never know what it originally was made for.
