Any autoparts store , usually next to the square drill bits .

Eh, technically they both actually exist.

I just wish I could find blinker fluid, I ran out last week and turning just isn't the same. :willy_nil

Funny thing is there IS such a thing as a drill bit that will drill a square hole...well, kinda. It's more like a combo chisel & drill or drill within a square chisel.

They have them at AutoZone. They are next to the cans of elbow grease and adjustable metric wrenches.

LOL! Its funny these days when you talk about exhaust fluid, and people look at you funny, until they realize it is actually legit. We had a new parts lady a couple years ago, and a guy came in and asked if we had any Blue DEF exhaust fluid.. the look on her face was priceless..she looked at me like WTF??? I grabbed some for the guy, rang it up, and he was out the door. She said "Oh my God, I thought he was joking!" LOL!!

Yup, it's called a mortising bit (morticing if you're British) Made for woodworking. I've got 'em - beats hammer and chisel for roughing, but you still have to finish a precision mortise by hand.

But, there are two others- one is a broach, which can "drill" pretty much any shape hole. I've broached square holes by hand, using a square file to wiggle through a smaller round hole. Only works on thin, soft materials!

There's also a strange contraption that is a true rotary bit that does indeed drill square holes. Its motion is reminiscent of a Wankel rotary engine. There are some videos on Youtube that are pretty amazing.

Sorry to get serious.

When I was framing my garage wall I cut a few 2x4's short, so rather than waste them I ran to Harbor Freight and bought a Board Stretcher. I believe they were next to the grid squares and muffler bearings. Check for a coupon.

Hey 67 Carl, did you use a skyhook to set your rafters also? When I built mine it sure was a lot easier then using a crane.

Had a buddy try to order one of those from an autoparts store man we all laughed for hours
After listening to him argue withe the parts guy insisting that he needed a muffler bearing.

Also
High on the list to send people for is 100' of shoreline and a can of checkered paint.

Did you need a BA11ooN form to use the skyhook ? Some parts of the US also require a ST1 permit. Generally everybody thinks a ID10T permit covers all of it.

Hey! Not too many people have heard of the, as we pronounced it, Eye D Ten Tee permit - ID10T (idiot). We used to issue a lot of those when dealing with hospital I.T. Departments.

I was going with the skyhook but my HOA won't allow it.

At the gas stations we used to ask people if they wanted us to put winter air in their tires and when I taught HVAC we used to send students out to the supply house to get a bucket of steam or a Fallopian tube.

In the Navy we would send noobs over to maintenance to ask for a bucket of "blue steam".When I was a noob the other plane captian's sent me over to maintenance to get the "keys" for plane # 520, or whatever,so we could start it up.Those maint. guys played the part perfectly, looking in their pockets, shrugging their shoulders and then sending me to somewhere else.Half hour later, I had toured the whole squadron, searching for non-existent "keys".

By the time they tried to sent me to the ordinance shop looking for something called a "B10",I had wised up and told "em to $&@% off.:D

Broaching works on large hard materials too, you just need an even sharper and harder broach and a metric **** load of force.

Believe it or not Muffler Bearings were a real item used on the exhaust systems of Duesenburgs in the 1920's and 30" the bearings were available a few years ago through LNS Bearings.

- Actually, Mercedes do have muffler bearings, it is there way of stabilizing the exhaust system.
(the Germans killed the joke !!)
- The Dodge Stealth twin turbo has a muffler bearing and allows it to change the exhaust from normal to sport driving.
- Volvo's have muffler bearings. its what they actually call their rubber muffler hangers.
- There was some aftermarket muffler that opened up the silencer by itself that had a bearing.
- The exhaust on the GMC M/H chassis goes thru the frame rails and GM used "bearings" to allow the system to expand and contract with heat.
I'm guessing it was some Engineer's idea of a joke to design it that way.

Now off to find a carburetor belt...LOL...after changing the spark plugs in the diesel engine.
And the new fab, cross drilled brake lines.
Anyone got any cans of compression they are willing to sell or mechanic in a can ??

I'm sure the Navy guys here have heard of a DC punch. Send the new guy down to the DC shop to get a DC punch. The biggest guy in the shop then punches the new guy in the stomach. The really persistent ones cuss, then ask for the ^#*&ing punch.

I used to work in a truck shop, and one smartass I worked with used to go to the payphone(before the days of cell phones) and prank call the shop phone. One time, a newbie answered and he asked if we carried brake pads for a Jake brake. We all got a good laugh when the newbie came asking us if we had them.

Yep, we would play jokes about that when doing electrical and had some wires that were too short. Tell someone to go get the #2 wire stretchers...

There is also an HVAC joke about why round air ductwork is better than square. If your ductwork is square than all those square BTUs get stuck in the corners and can't move around. The round BTUs can roll around easier and distribute the heat better.
