Anyone tried the Tekton vises?

Has anyone tried the Tekton vises? I'm looking at the TEKTON 4-Inch Swivel Bench Vise | 54004 for $40 from Amazon. This will be for incidental homeowner type stuff. I'm also considering the Yost LV-4 Home Vise 4-1/2" for 28 bucks. The Yost looks identical to a Wilton that has served me well for 15-20 years for my light duty needs

Basically, my father inherited a large 1920s house in need of some TLC which means I get stuck doing it. I plan on building a 2x4 and plywood work bench and attach one of those small Irwin hobby vises---which is actually decent as long as you keep in mind that it's not a real wood working vise---but I'll also need something for light metal work.

Pawn shops, flea markets, yard sales, etc. are not an option because of location and time constraints. Thanks for any and all advice and suggestions.

We have the big 8" steel Tekton in the motorcycle shop now. We broke the old USA one :spit:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000NPT6O8/?tag=atomicindus08-20

I have a 906AS (6" all steel) Yost

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003JSY8TY/?tag=atomicindus08-20

I find them both quite similar in construction

Yost does have a 904AS though the price is about double the Tekton you are looking at.

Yost also has their BV4 on Amazon in a similar price range as another option to the 4" Tekton
(very very similar construction ;) ) or to the Yost LV4 with the open screw you mentioned

My BIL has that 4 1/2" vise in his garage. I strongly recommend you skip it. I've never used a Tekton vise but IMO that Yost LV4 is junk.

I'm personally no fan of $40 cast iron 30.000psi rated Chinese vises and most often in life you get just what you pay for :wtf:

But curious for my own interests if not also for the OP's and for the thread itself if you might expand somewhat on your statement as to why that the LV4 is junk

As for the BV4 to me the Tekton looks to be an exact copy as does the Wilton branded vise 11104 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00101V1S8/?tag=atomicindus08-20) 94% of 4 and 5 star ratings the Yost vise has with Amazon feedback review. :dunno:

And in general all 3 models of this inexpensive vise have very positive reviews

Oh and just to note the cast steel 60,000psi vises offered by Tekton or Yost are all Taiwan COO to the best of my knowledge still

The LV4 is the best selling vise on Amazon and 4.5* rating. It'll never be GJ tool snob approved but I'm sure it'll get the job done for home repairs. I used a similar HF one on my welding table for 20 yrs and it survived just fine

I have the Wilton 11104 and have always wondered if half the tool world that makes consumer grade/homeowner tools uses the same OEM for that one and the similar ones of other sizes. They all look identical in the pictures on websites.

I have the 6”. I use it a couple times a month and it’s held up fine. I want to replace it with the 8” steel Taiwan model but so far can’t justify it.

Just to note with a little online searching BOTH the Tekton 5409 and the virtually identical YOST 908AS can be had for cheaper than the current Amazon selling price on the Tekton.

I also see that Yost offers a Hi Vis yellow option now beside the old standard black wrinkle finish on all their AS vises 4" thru 10"

I've had the same one on my bench for the last 4 years and it has held up fine. I haven't really pushed or abused it, but I haven't babied it either.

Thanks for all the advise guys. It'll be several weeks before I can start on the repairs, so I have plenty of time to look at the options. I just thought of Tekton since their hand tool warranty is so good (only did one, but it was quick and painless), maybe the vise or vise's warranty would be as well.

Thanks
