I have been researching flood headlamps to wear doing my automotive work, as my current headlamp has too narrow a beam. Pretty much decided on the Pixa 1 due to its strength and how it has a notched system which holds the light angle well. Also love its simple switch which can be used while wearing gloves.

If you have experience with one, is the wear weight decent? Is the light satisfactory for doing work in a 12" to 3 foot range?

Thanks for the replies!

Is that the 60 lumen model? I'd think I would want more lumens for your use case.

Do you have an REI near you? They have a lot of headlamps and you can try them out.

It is the 60 lumen model. Petzl markets it as best for close proximity work. I don't work in the dark so only looking for extra light when working inside dark areas. For example, last night I was replacing a power door lock actuator and it probably would have helped add the additional light.

There is an REI down in Cincinnati so that's probably a good idea to pay them a visit. So many headlamps have all those modes, which would annoy me. A one switch/one large button with low/high/off is what I prefer.

Thanks for the recommendation.

All of the major headlamp brands will have multiple modes. I have both Black Diamond and Petzl. Mine are both ~300 lumens and that’s pretty good if you’re working on the car is a reasonably well lit garage. Too weak and the ambient light doesn’t let your eyes adjust enough to see a dim light easily.

That was my.concern in that the light output would be too low in my garage.

I might just bite the bullet and get the Zebralight as it has a 120 degree angle light emission.

If you do get a chance to lay hands on a few headlights, try out a Streamlight Pro Tac. I’ve been through a number of headlamps starting with what may have been the first Petzl LED on the market. The Princeton Tec Remix was my favorite for awhile and it was $40. Then I bumped to the Petzl Myo RXP for both close work and outside chores, but it has a small and poorly accessible switch.

The Pro Tac has been the best of all worlds. 65 lumen on low, 1000 on high, usb rechargeable, three battery options, one easy button. The beam has been almost intuitive when I’m working in engine bays. Insulated gloves can usually find the switch. I’ve yet to find a job it didn’t work for, both wrenching in a decent shop and out doing repairs in the middle of the night. Amazon has them priced about like the Zebralight

Do you have your heart set on Petzl? Black Diamond makes some pretty decent headlamps.

The last two Black Diamond flashlights I have owned have failed. Usually due to bad leaf spring contacts with low quality plating. Subsequently, I do not buy flashlights without coil type springs on the battery. I have had better success with Fenix.

Fenix or Nitecore LED flashlights and head lights that use Li-Ion 18650 batteries. End of discussion.

I have a Wowtac A2S I use daily at work and I love it. Three light modes and also has a moonlight mode which is like 5-10 lumens and also a turbo mode when you double click the button

Like most LED tech almost anyone can play now

I used various black diamonds and petzls when I did more camping and backpacking years ago, but nowadays for work like that I am using some cheapie Coasts from Menards. you can typically turn them on/off without opening the package. Also Menards, like REI will let you return anything.

Get the Pixa 3. You will be happy with it. Three *useful* modes, comfortable to wear, and the large knob works well with gloves on.

I actually bought a Milwaukee 2103 at Home Depot today. Seemed to have the perfect amount of flood that I am looking for and was only $29 (plus I had a store credit). Simple to work single button and uses AAA batteries that I can easily swap out.

If I end up not liking it I will keep it in my truck and probably buy the Pixa 3R as a birthday gift to myself this spring.

Thanks to all replies!
