Guys,

With Black Friday approaching, I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on a new tool cabinet. Harbor Freight has a US General Brand and Home Depot has Husky. Has anyone use either of these for more that a year, and would you recommend?

Trying to decide which brand to buy, can't afford a big dollar one. Looking at the 40-50" cabinets and chests. Thanks for any insight!

I have the US General Tool cart with 5 drawers. I have been extremely happy with it. Had it about a year. Many members are very happy with their boxes.

You've been a member for 3+ years and don't realize you are on the unofficial HF fan boy site? I'll save you the trouble, the HF box was made by God himself on the 6th day. To speak of any other tool box is heresy. The post below this one will tell you all about it.

Well I'll give you the Milwaukee one at least :) I personally don't own any, I refuse to have tools with the name of my home town that are "professionally made in China".

Harbor Freight's US General Boxes will give you a very good "bang for your buck." It's certainly not Snap On quality box but with all the money you'll save you can go buy some Snap On tools.

Kobolt makes some decent lower priced boxes too for another option.
I haven't used any of the listed brands as I'm a SO fan boy.

I have a couple Husky 7 drawer rollers with sliders. They're ho-hum **** but get the job done. I take out what I need for the job and put it on a nice Proto $$$ and another home-grown cart so it's not like I open and close drawers all day. I doubt I'll "upgrade". If I did it would be to couple of HF 56's and another Proto cart.
I've handled the ball bearing Husky too.A buddy has 3 new ones at the tire store. They're about like vintage Craftsman. Not as bad as ........ahem...."some" like to say but also not near as good as the HF stuff.
Bottom line Let you wallet and hours spent with a box be your guide.I s'pose if I were an :shocking:Automotive Technician :shocking: I'd be up to my ears in some Epiq or Macsimizer like some of those guys are. They do kickass and there is NO comparison.

My coworker has a Harbor Freight box and I have the Husky 40" & the De Walt 36". The Harbor freight boxes are tougher than the Husky but the Husky is a bit cheaper. I can get away with the Husky as it is in a work station and never moves. If I had to move one with tools in it I would get the HF box.

I have one husky and 3 HF boxes and have no complaints about either of the 4 there all great boxes. I will have to admit my Matco triple bay is the daddy of the fleet.

I have a Husky mobile tool chest with wood top work area I bought last year. I got a Home Depot Black Friday deal on it and it was Made in USA. 1 year later it still holds and work great though I don't move it around. It has the clear Plexiglas front. Please excuse the mess and SO sticker, I'm a wannabe.

I have a HF 44", a Husky 52" nine drawer and a Milwaukee 46".

If you are looking for a homeowners box, the Milwaukee has a lot of nice features and is well made.

If you are looking for more of a mechanic's box, the HF 44" is the better choice.

I use the Husky for a rolling work surface and to store detailing pads, buffer parts, brushes and other stuff like that. It functions well for that but I would worry about loading it down with the weight of a lot of tools.

The quality of the HF box and the Milwaukee box are very good for the money, but are a step down from my SnapOn cart.

Why would you recommend them for different applications? Just the types of drawers?

I have 1 Kobalt, 2 HF, 2 Craftsman and 2 Husky. If the prices were equal they would all be HF. The others are all decent but the US General boxes are pretty high quality for the money.

I think the Husky boxes are ok to buy. Are there better boxes? Of course. If the price is right, then I wouldn't be afraid to buy...but I'm not a pro, just homeowner with a lot of tools.

You won't go wrong with the red US General boxes. I've had my 44" for about 10 yrs now and still love it. It replaced my Husky & Craftsman stack. I've had the U.S. General 5-dr service cart for 2 yrs. I wish I had brought the service cart a long time ago. The U.S. General boxes are sturdy, function well and aren't ridiculous stupid over priced.

Whoa! Sensitive subject apparently. LOL. Thanks for all the info. I never paid attention to tool box threads before as I wasn't in the market. I've been limping along on some 12+ year old Craftsmen boxes and a no name box from 1985 that the drawers barely work on. Anyway, my tool collection has grown and I need to get some boxes to store everything.

This is for my home garage. They won't be moved once I put them in my garage. HF, Home Depot and Lowe's are all fairly close to me. So, I guess I'll choose from them. One day I hope to step up to a better box, but for now, this will have to suffice.

So, looks like HF is the better quality box. I was somewhat skeptical based on some other stuff I've bought from them before. I get a 10% veteran's discount from Home Depot, so that's helps with the price there. Thanks guys!

I LOVE my HF 44". Got it for $359 (IIRC) with the coupon and not looking back...I'm not a professional but it's a damn solid box for the money.

I will also add I have a small Husky chest and my dad is a huge craftsman guy, I like the HF way more.

The Craftsman52" top and bottom that goes on sale from time to time for 999.99 is the best bang for the buck box out there. IMHO. I want to buy one.

I recently bought a new box. I heavily considered the HF box, as it was in the right size and price range. I also looked at the lowes and HD offerings.

What I purchased, as it was available to me (not much outside of NE and Midwest) was a Menards Masterforce 46 inch. It's more expensive than the HF, but considerably less than a truck brand box. After careful consideration of it's features and my needs, I felt it was a great deal better than the HF. I liked the way the drawers worked, they seemed more ridgid due to slightly better design, and overall the fit, finish and quality was better. Materials and construction features were similar to the HF boxes, the slightly better design and construction makes it a much better box. Like a lot of the goods manufactured in developing countries, the HF can copy the materials and looks of better items, but falls short in the testing and improving the design, and in doing quality execution and quality control of the final product.

The HF box was better than the HF and Lowes boxes of comparable price because of essentially "brute force" methodology. The metal is thicker, there's more of it, there's more/better glides, there's better bracing, lining, gusseting pieces built into the design. The assembly quality is maybe a bit lower, but if you examine the box you actually buy, you can sidestep that issue a bit. Overall, the brute force method makes it better than other low line boxes, but doesn't bring it up to the top of the mid line boxes and doesn't even approach the lowest rung of the top line boxes.

The HF is a good value for the price if you like it and it fits your needs. If you want something elegant as well as functional, it starts to fall short. If your needs demand a top quality product, you're going to need to spend 5 to 10 times as much for a top tier box instead. If your ego demands a prestige product, you're going to have to pay top dollar for a truck brand box.

Just for comparison, I have an old Williams road box, a Snap on KRA road box, a Masterforce 46" set (Menards top line) a 26" Performax set (Menards lower line), and an assortment of Kennedy's. I consider the HF US generals to be below all of these I mentioned, although they approach the quality of the Performax and in brute force strength exceed the Kennedy's (not in quality, though). I'm a typical Garage Journal level do it yourselfer, picky about my stuff, own a full complement of professional quality tools, but not doing professional work every day. I'd use the HF boxes as storage to support my workbench, but wouldn't use them for my heavy duty mechanics tool storage needs.

Here's the link to the Menards box I bought: http://www.menards.com/main/tools-hardware/tool-storage/tool-chests-boxes/masterforce-reg-46-tool-chest-and-cabinet-combo/p-1444451680170-c-9188.htm?tid=6340261015027287296

Coincidentally the 52" top and bottom premium heavy duty with the griplatch drawer pulls and made in USA is presently on sale for 999.99. Again only my opinion but this is one the nicest box store tool box out there. If you need smaller the 40" top and bottom is 799.9? And the 40" red and black heavy duty without the griplatch pulls is 566.00. This is a nice combo for the money. I was thinking about getting 2. One on each end of my bench. Don't get these confused with the crappy standard light duty boxes. These are just as nice as the HF boxes if not better and definitely nicer and better built than the Husky. Again my opinion.

If you're seriously considering Craftsman . . . . . which is longshot to find anything affordable that's worth buying . . . .
. . . . .
. . . . . . . . go to SearsOutlet and find Craftsman INDUSTRIAL toolboxes.

I've only seen these at one SearsOutlet in midwest and they were very stout (better than HF) and quality fit and finish. Not sure if Waterloo makes these ??

If the demise of Sears forces deep discounts on these, I'll buy and ditch my HF, however I only have $220 invested in bottom 44" US General roller as I bought it from pawn shop.

Waterloo makes all craftsman boxes. And some of those industrial boxes that are 18" deep are IDENTICAL to the premium heavy duty just red instead of black. Now the 24" deep ones are awesome. I seen one at Sears outlet in Toledo. Very nice boxes. The heavy duty and premium heavy duty boxes get the residual bad rap because the light duty boxes are so ******.

Had My US General 26" box for 3 years and no issues so far.

To the OP's Question
HF VS husky I would go HF based on how good my 26" has been to me and that the last husky box I played with at HD the drawers flexed like crazy.
