I was just thinking of some things my Dad had in his garage, when I was just a little kid, and I remembered he had a pulley light, similar to this:

There were times he could pull that light down when you needed more light on the subject, and it easily could be pushed back up out of the way when you didn't.

The light itself has a pulley and a counter weight, and I remember his worked GREAT.

I have seen some decorative ones at my local hardware store, but not really an industrial type one for some time (although I could probably GOOGLE and find one.)

Anyway, I was just curious if anyone may be using one now ?

That's really neat. I've never seen one of those. I can imagine how handy it would be in a garage. It looks like that one swivels as well.

I've put the in kitchens many times. Homeowners love them. You can buy pieces and parts online to customize them for exactly what you need. They'd be perfect over a work bench.

As a kid I remember my dad had one in his kitchen. I thought it was pretty cool.

Pretty cool, but spendy as well. New ones from say, Restoration Hardware, can run from $250 to nearly $1000. Best to find an old one from a garage sale nobody needs anymore, if you're so lucky. The OP's pic shows one sold at RH for $550.

The cool factor is way high on that light. Functionality looks pretty good too, being able to swing it around and adjust it for height.

Might not be a problem for you, but the fans are always running in my shop and I could see that light swinging around due to the long cord it's hanging from. The moving shadows might be annoying to you. Pure spectulation, of course, so take it for what it's worth.

Those are really cool! I bet there might even be enough skill in some of the members to make one themselves. Doesn't have to be pretty if it is over the workbench and could have some cool themes. I'm thinking a chain and sprockets might be neat (wiring is a little tougher though). Kitchen might be another story.

I'll be the first one to say it, but I don't really see the usefulness (in the average garage/shop). Granted, it's an awesome conversation piece, and would surely be neat in some places, but it is cumbersome and in my opinion, doesn't really belong in most garages for space reasons. There are far better lighting solutions available.

That being said, if it fits your garage, why not build one? It looks simple enough. A couple old manual sewing machine wheels, some welding, and your set.

The cool factor is off the charts. Would be absolutely killer in a some steam-punk, retro-modern industrial decor. Sure they would be great in a garage, but it'd be more badass in a kitchen, dining room or home interior setting.
