I have. Its been up for 8 years now in the sun everyday and has never lost the color. I put up about 60 feet. Just need to use all the proper hardware for that type of fencing. I also used the gates. Install is easy as pie.

I also pressure wash it at 210 degrees once a year to get all the grime off of it and comes out looking new. This was the one that I used. Keeps 2 big labs off of the lawn. I cant get the link to paste so I just added what I could.

we're debating vinyl and wood. the fence needs to go up in the very near future. I like the idea of easy maintenance of the vinyl... many of our neighbors have had it up for years and it looks as good as the day installed, no color fade and no cracks. But the price of wood is very attractive... plus I kinda like the appearance of wood.

I've used vinyl fencing and will never go back to wood. Easy to install and almost no maintenance. I like it better than wood and think the fit and finish is so much nicer than pointy stockade fencing, but that's MY personal preference. So I guess you might just want to go with what YOU like. Just remember... maintenance almost every year: wood cleaner, sealer, wood cleaner, sealer...

We have a vinyl fence around our inground pool, it has been up about 10 years now. Previous Owner installed it so no feedback there. It looks good if you pressure wash it to keep it clean.

My one complaint is when the lawn mower launches a stone, it does not provide any resistance and now you have a hole. While my fence is 10 years old, it has around a dozen small holes created by mowing & stones.

Also set the posts well, I have two posts I will need to reset as they are starting to lean.

Vinyl is great. I used the ones from HD that were about $40/panel for the 6' privacy fence. I installed myself. Just dig the holes deep enough and set properly with the concrete and it will be there forever. I used white and have no issue with stains. Obviously, I don' tworry about fading! :)

Not completely on topic:

when doing my deck railing I did some research on composites and such. I stumbled upon this which addresses some vinyl fencing. If you take the time to read it I find of particular interest the piece at the bottom of the pg regarding the Extendex plant:
http://www.gardenstructure.com/composite_decking

I almost used 4" sq Trex posts for my deck railing, and am so glad I didn't. I've seen what Trex does after time when unsupported: warps and bows. I realize Trex and vinyl are different. Generally speaking most vinyls and composites are great in compression and no good in tension, thus I would never trust any of them for a fence.

That said, wood will warp too. Every redwood 4x4 which supports my deck has warped, and every green treated 4x4 in my dog yard has warped. At least wood is cheaper, more readily available and universal vs vinyl which is often special order or proprietary to manufacturer/brand name.

If I want cheap, fast, and even a little - disposable - - I use wood. If I want long term, strong, no-nonense I use steel. I do, however, enjoy my Trex decking underfoot, but shoulda gone 12" on center vs 16"

All this from an ******* who has no direct experience w vinyl fencing

As carpenter I have install about 4 different type of vinyl fences. The stuff that lowes sells is junk. The product gets cold during the winter and the wind blows the fence panels and snaps the brackets. Now they do have a "special" fence you can order in that the rails snap into the posts. Its comparable to what long fence and the other fence installers sell. However it is also junk, a 8 foot "section" is only rated to be installed on a slope of less then 3/4". If you want vinyl fencing then get it. However stay way clear of US fence/Barrette fence(stuff lowes sells).

I have it 6' tall around my back yard. The PO installed it about 5 years ago. It looks great and doesn't crack. I have exreme temp variations form teens and 20's in the winter up to 120ish in the summer, so it gets a work out. My only complaint is its bright white. You wouldn't think that to be to bad, till you look out in the back yard in the summer and get blinded by the glaring white fence:shocking:. I really need to plant more along the fence lines.

My 30 year old cedar wood fence has never had any maintenance, sealers, or washing and it still looks OK. It has a nice gray patina and it gets a little green in spots when it rains this time of year. It is getting a little worn around the edges where the squirrels chew on it. I need to fix another spot where a tree limb fell and broke some pickets.

Like every thing else nowadays I'll bet the quality of your old Cedar is far higher than what you can buy new. What they call Heart Select Redwood around here barely passes for sapwood IMHO

My thought is it looks well.......like plastic.
I've added wood fencing to chain link posts and gates and was pretty happy.

I have installed fencing for 5 yrs and a few things I've learned about vinyl. First , if you have a shaded area you will have to clean it [ btw don't use bleach,it will eat the uv inhibitor thats on the surface try 409,mean green or a mild cleaner] just like siding . But if you do, clean it well and then use ammor all or go to a detail shop and ask if you can buy the product in bulk that they use. ie super concentrated it will last a while. Vinyl that we install ranges from$15 to $45 a ft installed 6ft high with alum or galv metal in the bottom rails.

At the time it was the cheapest cedar fencing available from a discount home box store type place (Payless Cashways).

We have some vinal fencing around are one barn leeding into a pasture. Its hard to say depends what your using it for. However for the most part it doesnt fade to much in the louisana an arkansaw heat. As far as installing it, its not to hard to do. The main things is make sure the posts are deep and the boards are level. I personally will recomend going deeper then required on the posts. Its nice because its smooth from the start and theres no worries for termites. On the downside if you choose to remove it its more of a hassle because you cant really reuse the boards or cut them smaller or stuff like that.

$40/panel?? Wish I could find that stuff!! Do they come with long vinyl posts? I though you'd use post holders set in concrete then bolt fence to those....:headscrat

Vynl is very expensive too. I was looking at close to $30k to do my yard vs around $10k for wood.

That's more like what I've found. The stuff I can buy is $25/foot. 6 foot sections are $150 each.

If it looks like plastic and costs like plastic.....well....

I have noticed on more than one occasion that the vinyl fences have blown apart from the force of flying slush from the snow plows in our area. This is when the fences have been used along the roadside. The posts and rails are still intact but the vertical vinyl "boards" were all blown out and laying on the ground.

I would have liked to have used either Vinyl or Composite / Trex type material 3 years ago when I had my Cedar privacy fence installed, but in many areas such as mine, the HOA's and even the municipalities stipulate what type of fence material can or cannot be used, vinyl is not allowed in my part of the world. I do know people in areas where their are no HOA's or covenants that used vinyl and they had mixed results, some had wind damage the fence, mind you this was a professional install, the other folks have had no issues, same company installed theirs as installed the folks who get the high winds that literally crack the vinyl.

My parents have a 6 foot cedar shadow box fence (spaced pickets on both sides) that was built in 1964. It was built with sch40 3" galvanized steel post with a concrete curb along the bottom. The rails have been repaired a couple of times, Its looking kinda bad now but its still there. I like the look of cedar better than the white plastic fences. My dad was in the fence business for 45 years.....:)

OK boys - got it done - finally! It's been raining here for MOST of May and now June, breaking records and then some. :( Only by jumping to it on the 2.5 sunny days was I able to dig and cement the posts, then string up the panels. The only glitch was that I was told to dig 6" by 3 foot holes, which went fast with a post auger, but then found out they needed to be 8" by 2 feet.....so I just redug them by hand.....

Everyone (inlcuding me) loves it. So white and straight!

IMG_1983.JPG

Holy **** is it raining hard agin right now -

Also - on the last sunny day - I got ONE of my driveways re-asphalted (Both are getting done)....

IMG_2016.JP

They where only able to put a patch layer down on the spalling cement on the seconf drive....

IMG_2013.JPG

When the rain breaks they'll be back to finish the one to the shop which will be SO nice: it'll be much wider in front of the shop, giving me area to park more stuff!!

personally I think it looks tacky as hell, especially if all the surrounding houses have wood fences. And its more expensive than cedar. They say its less maintance but cleaning it once a year sounds similar to staining it every few years.

Thus far most people who have come to look didn't know it wasn't wood! I think what looks tacky is half rotten, slats missing, peeling paint (or faded stain) wooden fences! So screw you Mr. Mo-Fo!:lol_hitti

Ill post pics of some of the neighborhoods white pvc fences. Yours doesnt appear to be of the same ****** quality. And being tucked away, it doesnt look as obtrusive either. I still got the love for cedar though:beer:

It doesn't look bad at all. In the last pic you can see that it blends with the garage door too being white vinyl. I do agree that any fence that's put up straight and kept in good condition looks much better than one falling apart or even leaning over.

Well I don't have to respond now because that was pretty much going to be my response to a "T".

I have replaced the brackets on our Lowes fence three times due to wind and had to replace 2 or 3 of the vinyl slats

Interesting.....
You don't see too many 'fences' here in CA...unless it's in the front of the house...gangster houses have chain link fences to slow down the po po when they come a calling....

But for the most part, the 'fence' of choice is cinder block wall. Has anyone tried that?

My whole back yard is red block...0 maint....one side has been up for about 30 years....

Ive seen those style houses with the block walls, Every house in the neighborhood will have it....along with a 10' x 40' backyard. most local codes up here in the midwest dont allow for block privacy fences.

Mama has no trouble keeping me in......

Truth is....my back yard is 50'x51'....with a garage on one side.....so usable space is about 30'x51'....for now....

Block walls are not the best thing for keeping people in or out....

If you really want to keep people out....put up a chainlink fence and plant Bougainvillea along it....it has these 2" long thorns....I don't care how badass you are....that shrub will stop the best of em....

Are they afraid of melting in the rain? They pave here rain or shine. Good luck with your fence, but I expect it will look like junk in 5-6 years based on a many of them put up around here. Be real careful with the weed whacker too.

E-Tek.......Did they put asphalt over the top of your concrete? The reason I ask is that the wife and I were considering that, but the contractor that did my other driveway said it would not last if he did it that way.

I figured it would last longer if done that way as it would not crack as easy. I know the road to the Honda factory was done with concrete and asphalt. They put the concrete down first so it would handle the weight of the trucks, then asphalt over the top of that.

I'm curious, because I like the benefits of asphalt as far as snow and ice melting and it can be redressed periodically and where our concrete is, if it gets ice on it, it seems to last most of the winter.

So you mean that there are places where vinyl cannot be used for fencing :dunno:? That is news to me. Of course the fence that you buy will depend on why you're buying it in the first place. Vinyl probably will stand up to normal wear and tear and it looks decent but it has its limits.
www.future-outdoors.com

I wouldn't give $.10 for vinyl fencing. It looks nice, but if you have any winds at all, it will take it right out. I had three sections between my shed and garage and had to replace the brackets 4 times. My neighbor has it around his swimming pool and not a month goes by that there isn't a panel or two down because of the winds.

DEF go with wood. I solid stained my wood fence and after 12+ years it looks just as good as when I put it up especially with shrubs and trees behind it, and it looks natural. As was stated, the plastic looked too plastic ha.

This thread is 3 years old and I have a feeling that mister AUTINTURNER154 is a spammer
...

On the flip side of this, How has the fence been E-tek? Any maintenance problems to speak of or has it been trouble free?
