Hello Gents of TGJ,

Wanting to try Plasti Dip on some of my tools. Looking for some feedback, good or bad, on this stuff? I see you can get it in the dip can or the spray can.

Mainly looking at dipping some older pliers and bike tools but if the results are good, I'm sure to be rummaging through the garage for other items to dip. Many thanks in advance.

I used the can to dip various pliers & adjustable wrench handles. Works *okay*, just follow directions and don't get in a rush. Afterwards you will need to hang them to dry. Even with a couple coatings it's nowhere near the thickness of OEM...

Plus it tears easily and gets dirty really easy.

Painted the wheels on a previous car. As stated above it is not durable and holds onto dirt. Maybe wire heat shrink tubing could work better?

Haven't used the dip can on tools, but have used rattle cans on wheels. Did my winter wheels in rattle can black, also my grill on the car.

One thing I noticed is that even a few days after application the paint/dip felt soft, and rubbery with is a PITA to clean and I would also think stains easily. After a few weeks it feels much harder and probably wouldn't stain as much.

The dip can has been around forever, dries up b4 I get around to using it. Several manufacturers make the rattle can version. I did all the stainless and chrome on a 55 with the flat black. Nice thing about it is, if you change your mind just peel it off. It's not permanent, rubs off.

I didn't use all the dip can, so I used a piece of aluminum foil across the top, then put the lid on, and stored it upside down. Hopefully that will work similar to the painter's trick of storing paint cans upside down.

The aluminum foil buys you a few extra months of usable storage. Otherwise the can hardens under that plastic cap in a matter of weeks.

I sprayed a chrome bumper on my pickup with 3-4 coats of black PlastiDip... it's held up really well for over 2 years... still looks good.

I got a pot of the dip in yellow as i had to do a repair on a vinyl John Deere Gator seat. Worked nicely for this application, not as good as a new seat but it sure holds and looks better than yellow tape. Also dipped a few old tool handles. Needs a lot of dips to get a good thickness, but if you take your time and put on a lot of coats its a good job, but does get dirty quickly.

I've used it a couple times. The best I can say is it works but isn't durable. It gets hard and brittle over a couple yrs and breaks up...at least it did for me.

My feelings about Plasti-dip is about the same as most others'. It's better than nothing....but not by much.

I did a couple of pieces a number of years ago and am happy with the results.
One suggestion is to make the first dip shorter than where you want it to end then make each successive dip slightly deeper so the coating tapers down neatly.
I stored the can for severs years and is was still useable.

These were black plasti-dip rattle canned, like 6 coats. They were put on for winter and still look real good, haven't cleaned them yet, that will come with warm weather when I switch to the other wheels. Only prep done was a good cleaning, dipped over the factory clear coat.

I used it for some parts on the truck. Chrome rear bumper and the front grill surround. I didnt want chrome so did a black. Also did the badges. Did it back in 2012ish time frame and its held up just fine (the rear bumper is since gone though). The grill has some chips and missing parts on the edges but otherwise has held up just fine. I applied it after a good cleaning and applied it in a bunch of thin coats. It dries pretty quick so doing a bunch of light coats isnt that time consuming.

As for doing tool handles...I wouldnt see it holding up well to that type of use. I view it more as something you use when you want to "paint" something and not touch it type thing. I have wash the truck plenty of times and taken it through a car wash a few times and its held up to that

I bought a couple cans of Plasti Dip off ebay for 11 shipped. I did the hubcaps on my 2011 Ford Focus S. I like it. The only silver/chrome areas were the hubcaps and the grille. I will do the grille tomorrow. The blue and the black really looks nice together.

I did 3 coats. It goes on easy. It doesn't blow around as much as regular paint. I think I might be able to do the grille with what's left in the one can, so I will have one can leftover.

Here's a pic. After I do the grille, I'll post a front end pic. You don't want to spray any onto the brakes. I took the front hubcaps off (disc brakes, drums in the rear) to spray them.

You’ll need more coats if you want it to peel easy down the road.
