I'm thinking of getting a Window style Heating/Air Conditioner combo from Best Buys or Grainger.
Looking for one with the capacity of 15000 cool BTU, and 12000 heat BTU, for my 27 X 25 X 9.5' ceiling height. (Attic will be insulated but not heat or A/C controlled).
Anyone done this?
Do you think the unit I've spec'd is adequate?
The unit will only run when I'm working in the garage...which could be 2 to 4 hours every night.
Your thoughts and/or comments appreciated.
Thank you,
John

The unit is probably adequate to HOLD the desired temperature provided the garage door is reasonably well sealed.

But it will probably be too small to quickly CHANGE the temperature of such a large area from the daytime high/low to where you want it in the evening. You'll need a setback thermostat or other timer to turn it on an hour or two ahead of time.

One sounds way too small to make an impact in the time you need, problem will be circulating the air enough. Have you thought about partitioning off just some of the shop that you are working in? For the price you may want to check with heat/ac supply house and see if they have any damaged air handlers, or pick up a used split system and duct it.

I cool 1000 sq. ft. of my shop with a 40 year old fedders a/c unit...about 12,000 btu...I could hang meat in it and keep it fresh.

I have an 80K btu gas-fired radiant tube heater for winter use...same 1000 sq. ft.....I really don't need all of that for my shop...but sometimes i heat the whole shop (1500 sq. ft.) and it does pretty good.

I put a 26,000 BTU unit in my 930 sq ft garage that I got from Lowes. So far it's work great but I haven't had it in the dog day of summer here in Houston yet.

AND it will cost you as much to run it as your whole house heat/ac!

I have one now in a 24 x 24' gameroom upstairs. Our electric bills double when we run it.

I have a 18K AC unit in my 25x24x9 garage, and it helps.. but certainly won't freeze you out (at least not here in Texas!). I tried a 12.5K unit originally, which was 120v, but no good. Got this unit off season at HD cheap, and wired up 220v.
