Hey guys, Im looking for a 30 gallon 120v oiled compressor to replace my oil-less craftsman that is way too loud. Is anyone with a oil lubed 30 gallon willing to download a sound meter to their smart phone and measure the actual noise they produce?

And before someone tells me to get a 60 or 80 gallon with slower motors, etc, I am specifically looking at 120v compressors for various reasons.

Thanks!

I think you are over-thinking this a bit much.

The oiled is much less noisy than the oil-less obviously. By what percentage?... I couldn't tell you. I went from a 30 gallon oil-less to a 60 gallon oiled compressor. The 60 gallon is more quiet, but the main thing is with its bigger size, it doesn't kick on as much. Therefor, it seems MUCH more quiet!

I think if I had a 30 gallon oil-less already, I'm not sure if I'd go through the expense to upgrade to a 30 gallon oiled just to save the db's. Neither is going to be totaly quiet and both will kick on a similar amout of frequency.

I'd just build an enclosure for it.

Just my thought, not my money.

There was a "how loud is your compressor" thread in nov 2011. Here is my entry.

I can't remember but the info you need may already be posted there.

They also vary in the kind of sound the put out. I had an oiless that was like a chain saw running wide open. My Delta, while loud, is throaty and I like the sound.

You also have acoustics that are different in every garage, etc, etc.

You say you want an oil splash 30 gallon . . AND . . want it to be quiet, but don't mention what kind of budget you're wanting to spend ??

Here's an oil-less 10 gallon tank compressor by California Air sold at Home Depot that is only 70 Db - - - - runs $455

Also, there are dental office compressors that are real quiet as well, but you WILL spend a lot of money on them!! They won't have great CFM either.

We have one of these at work.

It is quite top heavy to roll around like a hand truck, but is one seriously nice machine for its size. That's about the nicest compressor I've seen in its size class. Far quieter than any other oil splash lubricated compressor I've seen so far.

Anything "dental" will be nearly silent, but will not have any real CFM delivery. It isn't too realistic to use in a shop.

Ditto. I picked up the California Air Tools 4.6-Gal. 2 HP Ultra Quiet, Oil-Free Aluminum Twin Tank Air Compressor a few weeks back and it's surprising how quiet it is. I had a very small 1/2 hp Craftsman that was so much louder.

I have a husky brand compressor. Here is a post I made on another forum.

I downloaded a program to measure sound level on my iPhone.

With the compressor "off", the sound at my work area in the garage was around 49db. With the compressor running it was averaging 97db but hitting 100db which is the limit of the iPhone app that I used.

With the silencer added, it was averaging 85db. It's a huge difference.
