Here's a few pics I took of some things I got while cleaning my fathers basement. Figure I'll be finding lots more and it has really got me paying more attention to older tools. Anyone recognize anything here? Any nice pieces? The 3/8's speeder is a Challenger, the 1/2 is a Billings Tool Company. The worst looking ratchet has KAL USA on the handle, no other discernible markings. 2 of the wobble sockets are plomb the others are proto, and the pick of the drawers is the rest I've got to sort out, just grabbed what I thought were the best to start with. So....Anything good?

Wow, nice haul! I love that really old ratchet. What is it?

Any time you find old Proto and/or Plomb tools, you have found something special.

Congrats!

Those ignition wrenches in the top box don't look cheap. And those bolt cutter things look neat. I see a few decent looking small deep sockets too.

What is that black disk with the 3/8" extension sticking out for? Some kind of spanner?

Looks to me like someone may have hooked up an extension to a sanding disk, so they could use a 3/8 drive air ratchet...or such. :headscrat

Definitely keep the Plumb/Proto I collect those myself. I would personally keep ALL of the old American made stuff and of course any truck tools that are in there. Look for good industrial brands and truck tools but there are many high quality older brands that not too many average people know about, check out Alloy Artifacts (http://home.comcast.net/~alloy-artifacts/) they have a lot of info on most of the good quality older brands you should look out for.

Lump, by the old ratchet you must mean the thru design? if so I didn't check it real close because I think have the mechanism is broken out of it, I'll get some better pictures tomorrow. You're also correct the black pad is a sanding disk on an extension, my dad used to mess with everything, luckily with the new craftsman set he got for christmas all his old stuff is free to have cause it's not organized like the new stuff and he doesn't work on much of anything. Ritter, those cutter things I think are some sort of crimper as the head only moves about 1/4 inch total but applies a lot of force. I've still got lots to bring to my house and sort, so I'm sure I'll have more questions and the picture will keep coming. Thanks for the input all.

Norcaltalon;
Yes, I did refer to that old "through-style" ratchet. Keep in mind that, if the mechanism is broken, you should not throw it out right away. There may be a fellow Garage Journal member with a similar ratchet which may be bent or badly rusted, etc, with a mechanism which still functions ok. So check first to see if it is indeed broken, and then to see if it has a brand name stamped into it anywhere. Then, you may be able to find a new home for it, or to find parts for it if you want to rebuild it. It's just a collector's piece anyway, but maybe someone will want it.

Haven't done much searching regarding the Kal tools ratchet, but am starting to look into a bit more. Lump, I figured collector piece anyway for the ratchet but had never thought of someone else need the body or having a good mechanism. Definitely gonna save it, will try and get a better picture of it tonight. But for now it's beer:thirty and work sucked so off to the fridge I go.
