I've been on here for around 2 years now and have gotten all sorts of ideas for outfitting my 32x56 garage with upstairs apartment that I currently reside in.

Anyway, I'm starting to plan for building a house next to the garage. Does anyone know of any forums like GJ that are specific to home building?

Right now I'm in the budgeting phase and figuring out what me and my fiance want for our house. I'm planning on designing it myself and doing as much of the work on it as I can. Any info would be helpful.

Me and my wife did the same, only we lived in a little trailer during construction. Check out any subs you hire, everyone of mine did something wrong or riped me off. Best of luck, I know you will like no or small mortage. It makes you fell good when people comment on your house and you tell them you built it yourself! (probable why I have yard sales, so people look at it.

This is indeed a very good forum.

I was a apart of this forum for a number of years, but they changed formats and all the regulars moved to a different site

forums.delphiforums.com/breaktimeclass

You'll find any answer you need here.

Good luck with building your house!

I'm another person who joined the exodus to Breaktime Classic. The new site is a good source of information, there are a lot of professionals there.

Besides Fine Homebuilding (or lack there of) there are several, General discussion forums like Tim Carter's "Ask the Builder", This Old House, Hanley-Wood's JLC (Journal of Light Construction), etc.
There are also a lot of trade driven sites- Plumbing: Terry Love's site; HVAC-Talk; Mike Holt's Electrical Forum; John Bridge's Tile Forum; etc., etc.

But, since you're in the planning stages start here:

Thanks for all the replies. Just took a quick glance at all these and they all seem like they will be great resources for me.

I am in the same boat, been researching a garage, but the wife is insisting we need more room in the house before I get a new garage, go figure. So i am researching an addition, while I know I can do most of the work, i would love a resource to see what others have done and guestimate costs.
