Anything wrong with using an old fuse panel?

I have a detected garage with an old style fuse panel. It's getting its power via 90 Amp breaker from the main house. I would like to install a 220v connection for my welder and air compressor. Is there anything dangerous about the old style fuse panel? Ideally, I would swap it to a modern breaker box but I'm renting.

It is better that you have a conversation with the owner of your property before you start any modifications or repair of the unit.

If one of my tenants were to change a fuse panel or add a circuit to power a welder, my first reaction would be to say WTF? and inform the tenant they had just broken their lease and I expect them out in three days or less.

Are you going to be putting new style electricity into an old style panel?

Seriously, addons and upgrades happen on old panels all the time. Just get the appropriate breaker once you have checked and resolved any of the rental issues.

I would be pissed myself if a tenant decided to do electrical alterations to the property.

If the landlord is ok with you doing the modifications maybe you could work out some agreement that he pays for the cost of the breaker panel. Would be a nice upgrade to the property. There are also permits and such to think about. Since it's not the owners residence many places would require the work to be done by an electrician.

Assuming the breaker panel and fuse panel are in good condition fuses are more reliable, but allow for home owners to easily put in the wrong size fuse so insurance companies don’t like them
