Koken is great. Its pretty silly though that you can buy them considerably cheaper from Japan than from you guys here.

yes..2 different things all together.
I've handled Koken sockets and used them. In my opinion they are right up there with the tool trucks. Also one of the only brands that has a huge array of specialty sockets for specific applications.

I have some Koken tools and absolutely love them. I'm also a fan of Vessel, Tone, and Engineer brand Japanese tools.
I get mine from Level Chrome.

Koken is still a great company with great product. Buy from frankstools, levelchrome or even ebay. They are considerably cheaper than these people too.

Koken hasn't embraced the higher tooth count ratchet guts, ~20-30 teeth doesn't really cut it anymore IMHO.

Their ratchets are actually really smooth, just like a Proto course rat(same style mechanism, very low back drag). They are fine when you are not constricted to a tight spot. Other than the low tooth count, my only complaint with that style of mech is the lever direction is backwards from the direction you are turning the fastener.
If we are going to discuss Koken tools, what are the thoughts on their regular sockets vs their surface drive? I saw someone did a big sample of different sockets and where they applied pressure on a nut, the surface drive seemed to do well, but i've also read about the 'slop' this style of socket inherently has to do what it does.
So if buying a set, would it be best to go with the surface drive or just the regular type?

Having used both extensively the suface drive (not mine but at my former workplace) do feel sloppy but grip well on bolts, even slightly worn ones.
I carried cheap decent Asain 6pt sockets of my own and prefered the more precise fit of these.
If you can live with an imprecise fit and love the ability to cover SAE and metrics in one set surface drive is good for you. I couldn't do that.

Koken Mid length are shorter than SO, I don't know compared to MAC or Matco those guys have POS websites. (the Koken web catalog is really great it lists socket dimensions for all of their socket lineup, so you can compare with what you already have to what Koken would be)
My 1/4 metric mid length sockets are holding fine and i almost exclusively use them with
the newer Snap-On TRLL-72 ratchet

Shout out to Frankstools.Com, all my new Ko-Ken tools have been bought through him.
A piece of advice tho is if he replies to you that a certain tool is not in stock, forget about it and just have your order filled with out that out of stock tool. I had an order delayed because of a brake bleeder wrench, then when I got the order that wrench was too big for the car i was working on at the moment
so i could have done without ordering that wrench.

Koken is up there with Snap On, Hazet, etc... World class tools and I would honestly take them over SO any day.
