Ever since I had a Fram Racing filter collapse on my race car I have never used another, nor do I ever plan on it. I remember a few years back in Chevy High Performance the tech editor bashed Fram, the next month he had to write an appology (they almost lost advertising I would say). The man just spoke the truth!!

Fram is terrible has been for years! I use Purolator Pure One or Synthetic on my domestic fleet. I only use German filters Mann, Mayle on my German stuff.

When I was roadracing motorcycles in the 80's they had a rash of Fram spin on oil filters blowing off the front of racebikes, due to oversized holes on the threaded connector

I never thought much of the Fram bashing or had even heard much of it 'till my Dad changed the oil on his truck, using a Fram filter....He made it about 20 miles before it started rattling and knocking and he shut it down. The filter was full of pressure and blew oil everywhere when he cracked it loose. Cost him an engine by the time it was all done. We quit using any Fram products.

I cringe at work when I sell people Fram stuff. I know people have their own opinion but i try to upsell Wix whenever I can. I run exclusively Wix on everything, even my lawn mower. They are dang good filters.

I used to use Fram oil filters and always had a lot of lifter clatter on cold start up. Switched to Motorcraft and the clatter went away. Apparently the Fram anti drain back valves are not as good as some of the other brands.

WIX for me. They are made right here in the USA and in my home state (NC) to boot. I've never used a Fram on any car I've owned. Around here they are like using Quaker State oil, just say no!

I used to cut open my oil filters after removal and inspect the filter media. It is very interesting to note who puts the most material or the least material into their filters.... Wix and Fleetguard (Cummins) are very good, some others - not so much.

Thank you for the info. on the fram filters, i have always used fram,
I love learning something new every day,
i guess i will not buy Fram Filters any More, Thanks Again,
I am the same way Chief, I always thought Fram made a quality filter and have used them frequently but this video sure was an eye opener. I used NAPA a lot where we lived before because I knew the owner and the store was convenient but I really didnt think their filters would be superior to FRAM...I too like learning things and I think I will be switching to WIX (no NAPA around where I live).

Orange can of death! They are horrible filters, especially when you can get a Purolator or Wix for not much more.

I still remember when Fram used to tie a string around the filter media to hold it together. Looks like they havent improved much over the past few years. I use baldwin filters myself or Napa gold/Wix if Baldwin doesnt offer one for the application.

The free oil changes on our Camry have run out so it's my turn. Was in Wally world the other day, the Fram filter for the Camry was $6.60 each. Looked up a Wix on Rockauto.com, $5.70ea.
Ordered $10 filters, saving $1 each, paid $5 shipping.

Less money, better filters.

Exactly. I don't know why people would use Fram oil filters when there are less expensive ones available that are better quality. Heck, even the SuperTech filters that Walmart use to sell were better (and cheaper).

??? Fram filters are sold at Wal-mart and you can not find one for a lower price. They are not expensive. When they got bought out the company went with Wix filters and pushed that brand.
What was shown in the clip means nothing. What counts is how the good does it filter the oil. That is the bottom line.

People might have a prblem with the Fram filters but It can't be to bad if Wal-mare carries them.

I doubt any of you have ever seen the old toilet pater filters. It was a can that screwed on to the oil filter out let and you put a rool of toilet paper in it for a filter.

If you had lifter noise more than not you had bad gas.

If you have had them blow out racing that is a nother story. They are not designed for that use. You need to use one that is designed for high oil pressure.

I have been using Fram filters sense 1966 and never have had a problem and I run everthing I own to over 200,000 miles and then give the cars to my kids that they run the for a long time. Are they the best filter Mabe not but I change filters all the time. I change the filters once inbetween oil changes and I cange the oil every 3 thousand miles.

The only engine work I have done on my cars is to repace the intake manifold on my Linclon Town Car. That is because the made the damn thing out of plastic and it cracked.

I use other filters because when they are on sale I buy a dozen at a time.
I know all filters are not equal but if you don't run them forever and muck them up they will all do the job.

Just stop into an O'Reilly's...we carry them. Should be plenty nearby, since Missouri is the Corporate HQ of O'Reilly's.

You'll be interested to know that every major brand of oil filter in America is made by one of two companies.

Don't buy into the brand marketing.

I never said that they were expensive, but they were still more expensive than Walmart's brand SuperTech (now discontinued) and Purolator Premium Plus on sale (both under $3 each). The equivalent Fram oil filter for my vehicles is priced almost double that.

I do agree to some degree that visual inspection isn't really the best way to judge the quality of an oil filter, but if I can get a better constructed oil filter for less money, I see no reason to use Fram.

I really don't have a problem with Fram. I've used them in the past on my motorcycle and never had a problem.

FWIW, I think as long as the oil filter doesn't restrict the oil from getting to the engine, it will not cause any engine problems regardless how good/bad it is constructed.

Using Wal-Mart as your benchmark for quality of goods. Really? :shocking:

When Sam Walton was alive MADE IN THE USA meant something to him, but when he passed they opened the back doors and China came running in.

Those Frantz toilet paper filters were from back in the '40's- '50's and used a separate cannister with oli lines back to the engine . They were only used in BYPASS circuits , never as full flow filters

A friend of mine works at the Wix filter plant located in Gastonia, NC and took me on a plant tour about 7 years ago.

Went to the part of the line where the can is painted ...and what did I see painted on the outside of some oil filters..the words FRAM along with their burnt orange coloring.:dunno:

I asked him what that was all about and he said that WIX is sometime contracted by FRAM to make some of their lower volumne filters.

I also got a chance to talk with their design engineer who routinely examines the oil filters make by their competition. When asked about FRAM made oil filters, he just shook his head and said "you better not be using "their ****" if you value your engine"....:lol_hitti

Champion Labs
Fram
Purolator
Wix

One thing to note -

Fram and Champion Labs are now both owned by the same company, a New Zealand firm called the Rank Group.

http://www.rankgroup.co.nz/

There has started to be some bleed over, with some Fram oil filters being rebadged Champ Labs e-cores. Who knows how far the product merging will go.

Also, Hastings is another company to add to your list. They make a decent number of filters.
