ymmv but in my area the extra guards routinely go on sale for about $3 and change.

I can't remember the last time I paid more than $3 for an oil filter for our cars. I usually stock up when either Quaker State or Purolator Classic are on sale. Back when WM carried SuperTech, I could get them regularly priced for less than $3.

I use Motorcraft filters myself, or Purolator filters. I use cheapo Pep-Boys Proline filters on my snowplow truck, I believe Purolator makes those as well.

If it's good enough for Ford Motor Company, it's good enough for my Fords.

Very interesting reading all of your comments. I cannot divulge to much, but I can say I am sitting in my office in a plant that produces 140,000lbs a day of automotive filtration media. That is delivered to most of the manufacturers listed.

That's OK. I can't remember the last time I thought the cheapest oil filter on the market was really the best part for my car! Guess it depends on what your concerns and priorities are.

So, you think that price is a good indicator of the quality of an oil filter?

Fram Extra Guard costs more than Purolator Classic, so it must be better? :headscrat

Another thumbs up for the NAPA / WIX.
Yet another vote for NAPA/Wix. Bosch filters are also good. Not just for their superior filtering, also for their thick outer housing - high burst strength for heavy duty and racing applications.

The "oil Filter Study" was great and a real eye opener, though I wondered how much can be trusted since it was last updated 2008 and before that I think most of it was a decade old. I just changed the oil in my new-to-me truck with 240k miles on it and the previous owner used Fram. I cut into it and found it still looks just like the one pictured with the cardboard end caps. I didn't find anything impressive or necessarily bothersome either, but I still would never put a Fram on my cars partly out of principle and partly out of witness accounts of issues that have come up.

I have been using Fram filters exclusively since 1962. In that time I have used them on over 130 vehicles. Since I retired 10 years ago, I used them in my three Corvettes, Viper, MX-5, S2000, RX-7 and collection of 9 motorcycles.

My dad had a service garage and only used Fram. In his 32 years in business there was never a failure on a single customer car. In my forty years of servicing my own equipment, I have never had an issue either.

I have motorcycles that cost more than most cars and high dollar high performance cars. I trust the experience that I have had.

The posters that claim they ruin engines does not fit the experiences and knowledge that I have acquired.

They successfully filtered the oil in the vehicles in the service intervals that the manufacturer states.

Many jump on the anti Fram band wagon because the filter media is secured by cardboard discs. The question should be is the disc capable of performing its job during the period of use. The answer in multiple millions of cases is a resounding YES.

Here is where I do the services. I found that the products used are not near as important as the tech's working on the vehicle. I learned early on that no one does better than me. They may match but not exceed my care in doing the service.

I do not recommend any product to anyone. I just decide what I use for my own. I also do not bash any product. In life the physical sciences have right and wrong answers. Everything else is just opinions with varying degrees of merit.

Fram and purolator USED to be good filters, til they went into the discount big box stores and quality went to the toilet! NAPA or WIX GOLD are the best on the market.

Many automotive nerds still consider Purolator to be pretty good quality.

Used fram filters exclusively on a 91 Montero that I used to have [gifted it to my youngest brother for his first vehicle] and that beast was clocking in at over 200,000 miles when I last drove her. My brother still uses fram on the Montero. I never had an issue with fram and to the best of my knowledge he hasn't had an issue with a fram filter either.

A very interesting video nonetheless.

1) just because you haven't had a problem doesn't mean you won't.

2) I don't need to see filtration data or any other tests; as they say, "a pictures worth a thousand words". I don't need to be a rocket scientist to see that that Fram in the video is a POS.

3) Even if you don't believe the pictures are indicative of the filter's quality, why would you ever risk it? even if the filters were $1.50 cheaper, I don't get the logic of risking a motor.

4) Yes, not all Frams are created equal...but I figure why try to figure it out; there are better choices. Fleetguard and WIX for me.

I have 10 trucks, 4 cars, 9 motorcycles and several other small engines. I have used Fram in the past and haven't had a problem but I don't anymore.

2 pennies,
Dave

I got 3 more cents worth to put in.
As ih4x4 said it is how good the filter works.
Fram might be in Wal-mart. If it was a filter that did not do the job and have problems they would not carry it.
I have used them for 40 years. Before they got bought out and other brand pushed to the front leaving Fram the step child in thier line. They were a very good filter in thier day and are still good.

I drive nothing but cars and trucks with V8 engines. I use Fram filters. I run the cars to about 160 thousand miles then give them to one of my 7 kids and they run them for another hundred thousand miles. I do most of the oil changes. They drop buy and I change the oil and filters. By the time the kids run them to a quarter of a million miles they are worn out and we donate the cars. When we give them away they still run great and pass smog here in Californina. Fram must be doing something right. Then again I change oil every 3 thousand miles. I never add anything to the oil or the gas.

I don't care what they look like inside. Do they do the job and the answer is yes. If it twitches your mind use what you like.

It pays to do your homework on filters. Wix/Napa gold are made with the highest quality. At work we use Baldwin filters, they to have very good quality. Also used Donaldson at previous jobs, which I may be mistaken but I believe is part of wix, and makes filters for Caterpillar.

I've never had an issue with Fram filters...I started using Purolator because the whole thing has that grip plastic stuff but then I had one collapse when I was taking it off...not using them again...might start jumping for the K&N. As for the Bronco I'll probably stick with Motorcraft unless I see some marked improvement on the Suburban when I get a K&N

Totally aside from which filter to use, but I won't ever use a Fram again, This guy should be nominated for the best advertisement film of the year.

1. He has a point.
2. He continues to impress the point through out the film.
3. Effectively.
4. He uses indisputable evidence (OK, anything can be disputed, but...) to substantiate his point.
5. His visuals are very effective in delivering his message.

If we had more advertising like this, the world would be a better place and we would be closer to world peace than we are today!

Dave.

Just sayin but I've used nothing but fram filters, for no particular reason other than they are available at the store I shop, for 20 years. My 96 s10 has 257,000 miles and going strong. My 07 accord has 156,000 miles and just getting broken in. No engine problems in 413,000 miles. I love this site but some things get over analyzed.
