Just acquired an explosion proof drop light. It is in great condition with the glass intact and cage as well. Any ideas of the value of these and what industry they pertain to?

Explosion proof stuff is expensive ,I installed a 100 amp explosion proof electrical panel in 1978. the panel alone was $3000. This type of stuff is used by the Oil and gas industry

Check Ebay, youll see some pretty wild price fluctuations on there. If its in good usable shape you might get a hit from a fab shop/paint booth that needs it. Otherwise if its used, most industry type companies wont gamble on used stuff.

Im a big fan of Vapor/Explosion proof lights etc.. totally overbuilt and industrial looking. Let me know if your looking to get rid of it.

Anywhere there is flammable/explosive dust and vapors. They are required in grain elevators/feed mills etc.

Explosion proof drop lights can sell for $500 - $1000 new. They're used in places like oil refineries, or wastewater treatment plants - anywhere explosive gases may be present.

edit: as mentioned, they're also used in places where explosive dust can occur, like grain and feed mills. The light should have a label on it to indicate what it's rated for - class 1 areas are explosive gases, class 2 is for dust environments.

I had to install a explosion proof phones in chem storage rooms for several hospitals, what a pita. In this case the phone itself is dead and all the electronics are outside of the room.

Bakery supplier had a dry product mixing room for things like cake mixes and the similar products.. The entire room had explosion proof equipment.

I guess they'd also be used in shipyards, again in confined spaces where flammable gases might be.

They are expensive new, resale is almost zero. Same with explosive proof tools. Reasoning goes something like this, if you need and explosive proof light, you need an explosive proof light. Are you really going to put your self, your friends, employees, at risk buying off the grey market. Worst case scenario something goes wrong and you have an explosion. There will be an investigation, do you really want to be standing in front of an investigator saying yeh I bought some random lights from Joe Shmoo. That conversation is not going to go well.

Paint booth maybe. Like has been said any industry that deals with vapors, fine particulates in the air, stuff like that.
