Appraisal Help Please .... KR537A

So long story short I have a KR537A (76 or 77 date code) that is in pieces, and i have had a few people express interest in the whole thing or in misc parts of it. The problem has always been value. I know its not worth near as much in the state its in, however for too little of money i would just assume keep it and finish it. So help me out here, whats a fair market value for this:

Not pictured is the original badge, new lock cylinder, lock assembly, and the trim pieces.

Trim is not perfect, and is a little banged up.

Lid has a dent, and is missing the stays to hold it 100% upright. Drawers are all straight and undamaged, main body is in okay shape but does have a dent in one side. Only rust is surface from sitting out mid stripping process.

I was really hoping to work a trade for something rather than having to put a cash value on it, but that doesn't seem to be as easy as i thought. So whats it worth?

don't even ask, lol its not actually my house, i just rent right now. trust me there are a lot of things i would change on this place if i could (that being one of them), but for right now, i'm just happy with a 3 car garage for a price i can afford.

I would see someone asking for a 100$ for this but I would still try to bring the price down...

FIWW, I've tried to bring back a couple of basketcase boxes and never made any money on them. A KR537A complete, with a few dings and light rust will sell for decent money all day, any day. One in the shape of yours is going to be tough to move.

For me, your photos and description are not enough to give an estimate. Let's ask the experts how much for:

1. A complete, well-used KR537A, with a few blemishes. One what I would consider excellent condition sold on eBay a couple of months ago for only $225. Naturally, shipping that large a box is a hassle and an expense, which is why the seller said pick up only. That limits the market. 2. A well-restored KR537A.

From these two ranges, you can subtract a large amount for the condition of yours and add the labor and materials to restore it. That should give you some help.

I paid $200 for a rough, but complete Kr537C that needed drawer slides and has been repainted ugly. I've seen nicely painted ones go for $400 on CL and ebay.

FIWW, I've tried to bring back a couple of basketcase boxes and never made any money on them.

I know that much, lol way too much work to make money selling. The idea here is that i will either sell it to someone for a more than fair price, or keep it and "restore" it for myself. Thanks for the opinions guys and keep them coming, like i said i was just trying to get a fair idea of what to sell it for.

I paid $200 for my KR537 that I am planning on restoring. It has all its pieces/parts and everything works. It does have some dents in the top but other than that it is in good shape.

Tough to sell or trade that. I'd paint and try to resell or restore and keep. Them old SO boxes are tough to get any real money for even in nice shape.

I see complete ones listed locally for quite a bit. i don't know if they get it out of them though. having interest in it in this condition hasn't really been the problem, its always been trying to come to a fair price.

I really didn't want to mess with parting it, but i know there are a few people on here looking for that badge, and i know there are others that could use a drawer, slides, etc that would appreciate the effort of parting it out. I would rather see the mint parts go to restoring 10 other boxes to great condition, than let it go to waste if it came down to that.

If it were mine I'd part it out. I'll buy three of the narrow drawers from you for $60, didn't you say one of your co-workers needs a drawer or two? I bet you could get $100-$150 without much effort at all.

While I'm usually against parting out a salvageable tool/box, it's difficult to argue with an offer like that. While I can't be positive without some research, I think the box I just bought has six of the same narrow drawers and I got the complete working box for $50.

Well mine is missing two and they are $130 each from snap-on. Plus I don't have space to store another box. But yeah, I'd give the OP that for just the narrow drawers.

He's got a couple of drawer slides and lock sold above.

Plus, I saw a post on here from someone looking for some of the spot-welded slides from the other drawers...

In the current condition, stripping not even done, I would offer to take it... basically for scrap.

Finish the job and throw a decent coat of paint on it... maybe a couple/few hundred.

Heck, it will cost a hundred or so just to buy the paint and materials... then you have to spray it.

Well, my former dealer got me a lock for it, and it was wrong. I also gave him the number off the slide & haven't heard anything from him, that's been at least 4 months. Tried talking to the dealer that comes through my current work, he couldn't find any info on the box & said I had the model wrong.....I'm tired of crappy dealers. I recently asked one of the dealers on here who I've bought from in the past & he never replied. The box is old enough I can't find any parts list on snapon's website. So while I would rather buy new, I'll buy some used parts so I can make the box whole. I'd even buy a couple extra slides for spares.....
