Approved Splicing Methods

I'm familiar with the NEC from the commercial/industrial side but I want to get a second opinion.

An inspector was looking a friends property I helped out with some renovations and the inspector must have been thrown off by the wirenuts which were Ideal Can-Twists (he's a snow bird from Canada so he brought them down with him).

Is there anything prohibiting their use under the NEC? I didn't see anything in 110.14 that would expressly not allow this. In fact I didn't see anything that would suggest any regulatory or certifying body needs to approve a splice.

I'm thinking this inspector doesn't like Canadians.

they may not have proper approval. I see they only show CSA Approved (CSA 22.2 #188 Certified) which is Canadian Standards Approval

Yup. I saw the same. What's weird (and I never thought about it) is where exactly does it call out they have to meet UL 486C (or whatever is required)?

Realistically not a huge deal, we replaced them but it got me irked.

same as here if we choose wire or light fixtures etc that aren't CSA approved, might not pass , depending on inspector

He muttered something about the UL listing. I'm guessing it was UL 486C.

Wasn't a pleasant person and I kid not about the Canada joke.

I deal with inspectors all day professionally and on the side. You never know what you're going to get. Most are pleasant good people to work with.

CSA is a NRTL, Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory, but a CSA label by it's self in the US is worthless like the CE label, but if it is marked as C & US, it's good.
