Beautiful, really like the eccentricity of the hub in relationship to the frame.
Great eye and execution.
Thank you

Thanks guys
Good to see a fellow St Louisian among the group, VW.

Thanks Royce, that was a key to the build for me. Wanted to show the rim of the wheel and give it a bit of asymmetry.

A bit of catch up. I did a bunch of cutting boards around the holidays. Here's some highlights.

Nice, I wish I was on your holiday gift list.

Those gutters around the cutting board are the best, nicely done.

Thanks guys! I appreciate the support.
Tarbell-cutting those was nerve racking to say the least!

I've been playing with composites (epoxy, fiberglass, carbon fiber) and wanted to bring a modern element into my builds. So I started small and made some serving boards of wood and epoxy. A friend bought one and had her husband, a sushi chef, work up the last two pics for me.

YES! ^^^^ Those cutting boards look amazing.

What type/brand of resin are you using? I also am tempted to start using it for more then flood coating table tops.

Thanks!

I use Total Boat epoxy with the slow hardener for these. You can find it on Amazon. The kits come with preset pumps for dispensing, no measuring or weighing.

What do you use for coloring? That white is impressive.

It was a white dye I found on Amazon. There's a ton of colors out there in liquid & powder form. Check out Beyond Wood Products, the colors he comes up with in resin are crazy.

Thanks Royce!

I agree, some of the better creative work, as good as any. I had some friends with a scrap yard, they used to take anything and the public would dump off scrap when it wasn't worth much. They salvaged some stuff for sale but in the day the selection for fab work would have been spectacular. I got a few pieces as they were practical but they really could built custom shelves from hell for near free materials.
I would have got a 48 inch finger brake, hundreds of appliances to work with etc, all nearly finished, painted.

I found this piece of black walnut while visiting a friends shop. He had it in his burn pile and I saw its uniqueness so I grabbed it. The tree had sustained damage, most likely due to wind, and had split perfectly along a grain line. So you can see the tree from the inside out, which truly a rare occurrence. I have both sides of the split.
I knew I wanted to make a receptacle of some sort out of this and the idea gelled pretty quickly. Take a section of the board, add some angled facets, and suspend it between metal legs. I wanted it to be clean and modern, so a monolithic design was selected. I wanted to do brass, as it's on trend and polishes up with relative ease. I knocked the walnut out pretty quickly, however the brass was put on hold due to cost. The piece got packed away and forgot about for about 18 months when I stumbled on it. I was in a better spot, so I ordered up the brass bar stock. However, having never worked with brass I let it sit for another 6 months or so. I was scared of screwing up my pricey metal. Then one day out of the blue I said to myself "**** it, if I screw it up, I screw it up. It's not going to make itself". So I cut the brass (cuts like butter, so nice). And went to polishing it up. About half way through one of the legs got caught in the buffing wheel and thrown to the concrete. One corner took most of the damage, however I was able to start again and get it squared and polished up.
So here it is after two years since its inception, my brass and black walnut valet (or candy dish). So rewarding to finish my own piece out. Just make what you envision and don't be scared to screw up, that's the only way you learn.

Down right snazzy,
How is the brass fastened to the walnut if you don't mind?

Royce

Thank you

It's held on with unicorn tears. lol

I drilled and tapped threaded holes in the brass and drilled slightly oversized corresponding holes in the walnut. I threaded brass rod into the brass side and then filled the walnut holes with Total Boat Thixo epoxy. Let set up and voila.

Slick way to fasten blindly.

Thanks so much. I'm working on an install (of someone else's work) and needed a pick up. Glad you enjoyed my work.

Love it. As much as I am not a Facebook person, your page is the one I most look forward too. And glad you went with polished... leafing through as I type.

This is a suspended double sided mirror I did a couple of years back for a remodel for a turn of the century home in the Central West End area of St Louis. It's pretty hard to get a good look at, because, well, mirror. It's quite the master bath.

Fireplaces seem to be my calling. Here is one from a basement finish earlier this year. The shelves are brushed stainless steel with walnut slabs. I did the fireplace surround and media cabinets with grille inserts as well.

I can't believe I never posted this loveseat on here before. I built the entire thing, including doing the upholstery. The trim is cedar and waterfalls down the arms. The back and sides are clad in antique car tire treads. A buddy of mine and I cut them all apart with a sawz-all, they had cords, no steel belts and then screwed them to the frame.

Bar height table for a billiard area. 9 feet long, 18" wide, it's a beast. Spalted & rotted oak encased in Total Boat resin on custom fabbed powdercoated steel base.

I like to think that I "Think Outside The Box" but I have no choice but to say you have the gift of "Vision" and the "Knowledge and Skill" to drag the inner beauty out of your donors at a level unlike even the best of us can. Nicely done to the second power! Now I am off to "Totalboat" for a more advanced lesson in composites, Thanx! Harry

Wow, thank you! That's quite the praise.
