I'll just drop this here as it seems like it's where it belongs.

Pictured:
DJ1901(Left) which I found on amazon for under $20 https://amzn.to/2ZTVRnG

SNAP ON Tools ecarb042 (right) $124 ATM.

Maybe not Snap on's hand tools but it sure seems manufactures are willing to copy some of their other products. Made a YouTube comparison here:

Wow... I can't believe Snap On blatantly stole that design from a cheaper flashlight. :scared:

Do we know for sure... which one was first?... It's a generic design... not a copyright thing. Are we assuming ... it must have been a Snapon design?

Their designs might be copied or borrowed heavily from but I think it's pretty unlikely to see full on knock offs like you do for other things.

1) Outside the tool world, no one cares. Snap On might be a huge deal to people that care, but for the average person? They'll have no clue what you're talking about. Even if you showed them Snap On stuff, they'd be confused because a lot of it looks like cheap knock off stuff itself. That's not a criticism - Snap On understands their buyers have more of an eye for quality than for aesthetics and that's where they focus. A lot of their stuff doesn't even have packaging and the stuff that does just makes it seem cheap. That stuff matters for the knockoff market where it's about the brand name not the quality. People that are shopping Snap on or similar brands should be able to tell what's good or bad regardless of brand.

2) Snap On production is in America for all their iconic products. From what I understand, a lot of the knockoffs are made by taking advantage of the actual assembly line. They either run a third shift (and a focus on speed not quality control) or they'll send people in to document the whole assembly line and replicate it on the cheap. Either way, it would be hard to get at Snap On's stuff.

Anything manufactured in China is subject to counterfeiting. My BIL works for a company that outsources to China. Factories are temporary in China, so the people working for you try to make as much money as they can while in operation.

A common trick is that the factory workers buy their own, substandard materials and then use the company’s tooling, dies, labeling etc. to make extra product after the manufacturing run is done. My BIL’s company got an accidentally shipped cargo container full of such product. Unbelievable the junk materials they used.

I had a snap on rep once, a few years back, come around with the route driver with pictures of fake snap on ratchets. They were not so much fake in the sense that they looked perfectly identical, but they stole the looks and the lines of the ratchets. Picture a snap on looking ratchet without a logo, thats what they looked like. I have never seen a fake in real life, I would have to think they are somewhat rare.

You mean like this? lol

you mean that's not a dual 80? :headscrat

You mean new tools aren't sold on e-bay, c-list, FB marketplace, pawn shops, etc :wtf:

There was a guy on eBay, who turned out to be a member here, who was selling imported “Snap-On” ratchets on eBay, and maybe elsewhere, which were actually imported ratchets from maybe Harbor Freight, that had genuine replacement Snap-On handles put on to the ratchets to replace the original imported ratchet handles.
Some other member on here either purchased one of the ratchets by accident, or noticed the differences between the ratchets, and called the guy out, especially once the scam was noticed and it was realized and confirmed the guy was a GJ member.
I think the guy also got his account banned.
The incident happened a number of years ago.
So be wary of Snap-On stuff on ebay that can have the handles replaced.

Also, there was inexpensive stuff sold at Costco, i think, which was legally branded with “Snap_On” due to a licensed agreement with Snap-On, so it wasn’t really counterfeit, just not what one would expect from Snap-On. It mostly wasn’t tools though from what I recall.

Haha CamaroToolMan, Florida's finest right there, he was entertaining till he started his ripoff ratchet factory. I dug up a pic of one of his creations from an old thread, I need to send to my buddy BlakeTheCarGuy, it's an actual counterfeit tool!
