Perhaps ask the phone company if they want business from someone without HVAC? There has to be a balance somewhere in this.....

How are you using the internet to complain?

How do you have electricity?

So many questions.

Hint: if someone calls you and you don't want to answer... you don't have to answer.

And I can see their point as well; someone you cannot easily communicate with cannot be or become a customer. If you insist on, well, what I don't know (Liveried messenger boys? Hand-written letters? Trained owls?), then they'll let you become someone else's high-maintenance problem.

In business, I've had all sorts of trouble with clients who simply will not respond to emails, won't answer the phone, and/or won't divulge crucial information about the project, overall strategy, etc. You have to tell the doctor where it hurts, ya know?

I had a related one, a few years ago I reached out to several HVAC companies to get a estimate on getting the house fitted for mini splits.
One of the 3 responded with a quote, I reached out to another company I called because I never heard back from them.
I asked them why they didn't call back and I get a long pause and they said they would be right back, once back on the phone I get the answer " Well, your no a customer of ours"
Good Bye!

At least with a phone they know who their talking to. There's to many crazy people out there. And right now if all there people are not working 80+ hours a week they shouldn't be in business.

How does having a phone make them know who they are talking to?

Ach, why didn't you say so?

Although the most prolific texters I've ever seen are deaf people. Followed closely by blind people. Seriously, a modern cell phone is one hell of a great communication aid for folks like you.

Anyway, now we're talking about an entirely different issue, and it's now very likely an ADA issue. Broadly speaking, most businesses serving the public must provide reasonable accommodations to serve people with disabilities. This includes hearing loss; you have the right to be able to communicate.

In this case, you also have to inform them that you cannot communicate by phone, and you therefore do not have a phone, and that you are requesting an accommodation, such as perhaps communicating primarily through email.

On the other hand, they may claim or believe that providing this accommodation would be an undue burden. It's a gray area. And they may not have known the root cause was a disability in the first place.

It might be worth firing off an email to the CEO, owner, sales director, etc. explaining the issue, and asking specifically for a simple accommodation under the ADA. Your average sales drone may not understand what that means, but someone in charge should.

Or just write them off and find another company that's less clueless.

At least it's a name and a address. Address if im in business it will show the address. If it's not the same might have a few questions for the caller. Is this a rental?
A phone number doesnt do any of that. I can go get a Google voice number for anywhere in the country.

Sorry you are having trouble. They won't know you need special accommodation unless you tell them. Try the company you want to get a quote from again. Send this "Hi, I am deaf, and e-mailing you to discuss a new HVAC system. Do you have anyone who can help me?" If they reply with no then let it go. When / if they ask for your phone number just write them back and say, "I'd wish you could call me but I am deaf, which means I can't hear on the phone. Is there someone who can use a pad of paper to communicate with me when they come out? OR "I am able to read lips and speak but I can't do that over a phone." (Actually, with modern telephone systems one can because their speech is turned into text, and you can reply normally to the text. Consider that if other people, family, need to call you too.)

Personally, I would not do business with a company unwilling to make a special accommodation for someone who is deaf. They often offer poor customer service by their nature of lacking empathy for others. One must have empathy to do outstanding in any customer-service related business - that includes sales.

Another solution is to have a family member call them on your behalf. Let that person be your intermediary. When you get to the final contract just read it well before you sign it to be sure it matches what your understanding is.

What special accommodation does he need?

Worked with hearing impaired for years, they have strobe lights for fire/phone. The Feds provide a phone with on screen speech translation into text.

Not having a phone is the OPs choice. If he insists on not having a phone, that is his problem, not a business's problem.

Well said. I went to a college with a very large population of students that were hard of hearing. My dorm wing was around the corner from theirs (boy that seems wrong now that I type it) and there were no issues communicating.

I suspect there is more to the initial post, and can only assume that the initial written contact/communication may have been lacking.

Are there so few options that you have to fight to give them your money?

$100 to come out for an unknown amount of time during a/c season could definitely be light. He's probably running ragged already

Where do you live? Maybe someone here can provide a referral

They make phones for the deaf that Use a flashing strobe for the ring and you can text on them and it converts it to voice and converts their voice to text.

I wouldn't do business with you either. Its a nightmare to get ahold of someone to do service work on their utilities when they don't or wont give you a phone number. We won't do it anymore do to the issues of contact.

only thing i can say is maybe to be able to call before they show so they dont waste a trip. Other than that, when did people start turning down money? If they are more worried about your info to get you on their call list I'd find someone else. You want someone that is worried about fixing your probelm and not worring if they can are get you on the hook for more maintenance. The most important problem a service tech has is the current call they are on. Your most likely paying the same rate as the next call.

There are text-to-speech services for phones, and even special phones for those who are hearing impaired. Most modern phones also have their own integrated speech-to-text and text-to-speech functions. There are a lot of accessibility options out there for people with hearing impairments.

Caller i.d. I've never called a pizza delivery with a blocked number have u? Been on jobs called for a delivery but they wanted a card number. With all these companies that charge for info from a name or phone # have no idea what they can get.

It can be spoofed. Easily.

It may give you a sense of security and it.may make them happy, but it shouldn't. A phone number is not anything special

On an as needed basis
I walked in to a chain haircut joint wanting the obvious.
She wanted my full name, address & phone number to get me in "the system".
I said "look, I just want a haircut".
She said "sorry, we need to get you in the system first".
So I left & went to the other haircut chain.
Wtf.
