Are pinless impact universal joint socket adapters that much better than standard pin impact universal joint socket adapters? Are they worth the extra cost?

Does any one have both the pin and pinless?

Yes.

The pinless design often has a lower height, and at least to me better rotation. the pinned versions always seem to bind in a certain angled position.

Missing from your pictures is the collar found on most pinned impact swivels. The collar make the impact swivel thicker. Pinless swivels lack the collar and are slightly narrower.

Have I broken a pinned impact swivel? yes. Have I broken a pinless impact swivel, nope. However, I'm sure someone here has.

Is the pinless worth the extra money, that is entirely up to you. To me, yes but, shop around for the best deal.

I have both as well (Sunex for my pinned adapter) and for a home gamer like myself, I see no real benefit to going pinless for a universal adapter. However, the pinless sockets themselves are definitely worth it over a pinned. Fed said it very well about the comparisons.

Try to compare them side by side.
I run through a lot of used tools. Both types can wear out.
But when I first saw the pinless type it was like a whole new world of universal.
Pinless is more smooth out of the gate.
Go with that.

My pinless ones don’t buck and kick like the pinned ones.

I was always curious about the differences... Especially when I saw the price of this set over at Cripe.

$180 Gearwrench 84936 10PC 1/2" Dr 6pt Metric Pinless Impact Universal Socket Set USA

Which made no sense to me when I was able to put together a set of loose pinned ones. Like this for about $50...
The Cripe set is part of the short lived Gearwrench branding of the USA made Armstrong/Matco/Craftsman pinless impacts, all of which are now discontinued (although AJ Manufacturing may have taken over for Matco at this point). It didn't seem to matter who's logo was on them, they commanded a premium price from everybody.

I've done just fine with my Snap-on/CAT pinned (collarless) impact sockets (bought used) and Sunex adapters. All have worked so well, I'm in no rush to sell off and "upgrade" to pinless.

Another interesting find is the Apex made pinless impact adapter at Home Depot that turned up this year.

I have both and break both equally it seems. I go through a lot of 1/2 drive 15/16 and 1 3/16 impact swivel sockets so much so that I have two of each. Then I have two 1/2 drive universal impact adapter for the same reason. This is were I am glad I spent the money on Snap On because the warranty has paid off.

I broke a Matco pinless 1/2 to 3/8 adapter swivel, side broke out and a chunk went flying. Not really sure why. I did notice it seems to have less of a working angle then the pinned type.
