Are the Advance Auto discounts worth it for tools? (LONG)

(as Stick would say, "it depends")

As in it depends how many other places sell the same item, and for what cost?

I decided to test it out. I have a big selection of tools sitting in tooltopia shopping cart. Approx $1100. No fancy chrome, no fancy diagnostic tools, no power tools, but a few air tools, impact sockets, and some other "mundane" shop/specialty stuff.

Tooltopia is generally considered best price in town, but now and then Amazon has some better deal going on. Cripes and Epsteins are mostly in a different category, for different purposes. More conventional retailers have other limitations such as the brands they carry.

That said, I decided to see what advance could do for me. I tried out a few different discount codes such as "big35" "visa" and one I think called "p20".

Everything in my cart or "wishlist" from tooltopia was factory shipped items for advanced, likely due to obscure brands and non hardline tools. Nothing was listed as "available for in store pick up", which meant I had to deal with shipping unless orders were over $75.

The "big35" discount knocks a helluva chunk out of an $85+ purchase. $35 to be exact. Unfortunately, if you pick something close to $85, the discount is steep enough to knock you out of free shipping. When I added more stuff to pad the cart, the additional markups kind of diminished any discount. This one works great for in store pickup on a purchase right about $85 if that option is available.

The 20% "p20" discount wasn't anything worth noting, or worth the effort. It just reduced the markup slightly, but not compared to online retailers.

The visa one was a little tricky and required a good bit of cart shifting to get retail price as close to $150 as possible. Again, purchases over that amount still get a discount, but savings diminish as markup increases. Hence the reason I actually made multiple separate purchases, trying to keep the price right at $150 or close to it. I have that luxury since my original list contains $1100 in various items. I can pick and choose a bit more and not wasting money on padding the cart just to be eligible for the discount.

So how did it do? (all advance prices AFTER discount, discount split between items)

2 separate purchases:

Armstrong Deadblow ballpein 32oz
Tooltopia-$58
Amazon-$59.65
Sears-$62.59
Advance $53.29 (+8.25% tax)

***TrustyCook actually sells a similar 36oz for $44.72, but $16 s/h diminishes any of that.

OTC/SPX engine barring socket (1/2" drive socket with a starter pinion type gear on the end)
Tooltopia-$40.92
Amazon-$43.41
Dealer-$73.44
Advance-$37.17 (+tax)

Sunex 13pc 12pt metric impact sockets
Tooltopia-$25.76
Amazon $22.28
Sears $37.79
Northern $34.99
Advance $22.01 (+tax)

Advance total $120.62 delivered.

This is not a post boasting about specific deals.
It is not a discussion about specific tools or brands.
It is not to draw a solid conclusion that advance ***** or is awesome when it comes to purchasing tools. ONLY a look at the effect of promo codes on the out of pocket price.

It is only a study in analyzing a specific retailers promo code to see how it matches up.

Real world results vary by the day as these prices can swing like the stock market. Up and down several dollars within the same day.

Shipping has to be accounted for depending on the retailer. So does sales tax. You may also argue about service after sales or warranty if that is your personal preference, guiding YOUR tool purchases.

The time it takes to research the desired items can be taken into account if your time is worth money. The quantity required to be eligible for what ever discount needs to be taken in account.

From these 2 separate sales made approx 30 minutes apart from each other, conclusions could be drawn several ways. One could claim advance beat most everybody by a few to several percent on out the door cost. A few individual items were cheaper elsewhere but also had higher shipping costs and/or higher costs on other desired items that could be used to become eligible for free shipping. One could also claim it wasn't worth the time of having to plug in different codes and look for the perfect combination of tools to maximize discount. One could claim tooltopia, amazon, or any of the other vendors prices were close enough not to bother.

Those are all personal opinions, I have not drawn my own on the matter yet

You've just got to do the math. It worked for me though, I snagged a SK 40 piece 3/8 impact socket set using a $70 off $200 code. Got it for $143.10 shipped, cheapest I see online elsewhere is 155.99 (tooltopia).

It's fairly rare for me to choose Advance over others for tools. Mainly for what you mentioned: too much time to find the right combination of items and promo codes to make it less expensive than tooltopia, toolbarn and others. Most of the tools I want (and don't already own) aren't in the stores, so local availability doesn't come into play.

Another way to look at it: for the person who isn't aware of all of the promo codes, Advance's prices are VERY high versus others.

I'd never even heard of these deals and promo codes at Advanced Auto until I stumbled onto GJ. Where do you guys find all these codes? Is there a mailing distribution? I guess I paid more at tooltopia for my SK sets then I could have gotten them for at Advanced.

I've also noticed that tooltopia will usually have some of the best prices (without discounts) around, on many of their tools. And if you keep tabs on them long enough, you'll see the sales end and then others go on sale. For instance, those Mayhew pry bars I bought are now listed higher than when I bought them a few weeks ago. So if you see something at tooltopia and the price seems too high, if you wait awhile, chances are it will come down assuming your need isn't urgent.

I've been using these code for a while now mostly on parts for in store pick up. But I've been eyeballing some of the new sk sets.

A lot of the time, the coupons are out of the mailed circulars for Advance Auto, although they'll also list them on the banner at the top of their site quite often.

I recently picked up a set of SK imperial wrenches from Advance, and using the $50 off $150, it was $120 and change (I believe it was free shipping over $100 when I ordered). Amazon lists the same set at $152 with free shipping, Tooltopia $129 with free shipping, and Tooldiscounter $119 shipped. (Unrelated side note, I just saw Tooltopia sells Leupold rifle scopes - er, ok.) So, not really a killer price for the set of wrenches, but about on par with what they're going for in the real world.

Technically, and this is a guess, but ALL states with sales tax would require you pay tax on the purchase regardless of whether the tax was collected at the point of sale. Tooltopia is a great example, in Texas you owe a "use tax". I would guess 99.99% of the population does not pay it however.

Advance has fair pricing on Sunex tools, but their online catalog is ****. I ordered 3/8 swivel sockets today, cost $107 shipped with tax for standard and metric sets with $5 in filler items to get the $50 off $150 discount activated.

Bagged up a 60 piece 1/4 sk set. Was $204. Just enough to get $70 of $200.

BTW dankicksass at first glance you name looks like dickinass

I use the heck out of the codes for in store pick ups on things like parts and fluids(excluding oil) and oil filters. IF advance would offer free pick up in store I would buy more tools from them. They have a really nice selection of quality tools online but after you figure in shipping and taxes then it's usually more expensive than tooltopia.

I recently purchased "Alot" of SK tools via Advance auto, Before every purchase i compared multiple different Online Retailers and Just about "Every" time Advance Auto was cheaper "IF" you placed seperate orders, For instance i found that the "Visa" code of $50 off $150 and Free shipping was nearly unbeatable so i tried to get as close to $150 bucks everytime and i placed 7 seperate orders.
