Are the thin profile Cman ratchets not as good as before?

I bought one of these ratchets years ago when they came out and it became my favorite... It broke on me about a month ago and I exchanged it a few weeks ago. I used it quite a bit last night and I just think it doesn't feel as good. I loved he pawl action and this seems rougher. I might just be idolizing the old girl and wanting this one to **** comparitively. My HF composite has WAAAY finer ratcheting.

They switched their manufacturing from USA to Taiwan on the thin profile ratchets. Do you see a made in Usa on handle?

Most of their "made in the USA" stuff is still made with cheap Chinese metals. As long as it's actually assembled here, they can legally claim it was made here.

Nothing Craftsman makes is as good as it used to be. Nothing.

I just picked up a replacement 1/4" thin profile to replace my older one that I lost. I haven't used it much yet, but it felt fine to me. Mine is also a USA-made ratchet. I haven't seen any Chinese thin profiles. I didn't realize those moved to China too. :-/

This is incorrect.

For something to be marked "made in the USA," the FTC requires that all or virtually all of the components be of US origin. In your scenario, the handle would be considered a non-US component, so it could not be marked "made in the USA." But, in your scenario, the ratchet could be marked "assembled in the USA," or "made in the USA with global and domestic components."

Here's an FTC website that is easy to understand and has more info on the topic.
http://business.ftc.gov/documents/bus03-complying-made-usa-standard

What is the standard for a product to be called Made in USA without qualification?

For a product to be called Made in USA, or claimed to be of domestic origin without qualifications or limits on the claim, the product must be "all or virtually all" made in the U.S. The term "United States," as referred to in the Enforcement Policy Statement, includes the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories and possessions.

What does "all or virtually all" mean?

"All or virtually all" means that all significant parts and processing that go into the product must be of U.S. origin. That is, the product should contain no — or negligible — foreign content.

The imported thin profile ratchets are made in Taiwan, not China.

I actually was looking at all the imported ratchets last week. All the fully polished ratchets were made in Taiwan. That includes the thin profile and the full polished version of the regular ratchets. The standard raised panel ratchets were made in China.

Very few of the current Cman tools are as good as they used to be before. That goes for the domestic (especially most of the domestic) as well as the imported stuff.

Actually it can't carry the made in USA lable if many of the components are imported. That's the reason we are seeing the USA lable being ommitted from many newer products even if they are mostly made here. FTC has pretty strict guidlines about this these days. The state of Kalifornia has been actively sueing corporations for mileading lables of COO for this reason.

I wonder how that works for warranty replacements though. They are simply putting in whatever guts they have to be exchanged for another ratchet. I'd bet they can put whatever they want in them for warranty exchange because they are not SELLING them.

That's a good point, tool is clearly stamped "USA" but possibly with Taiwan parts in it. Interesting.

They are exchanging your old USA made ratchets for Chinese made ratchets. The selector pawl on the new Chinese Craftsman ratchet is just enough different to not make them interchangeable.

You might be able to find a few stores that still have rebuild kits that will rebuild your original ratchet.

Pretty sure someone posted on here saying they were able to be swapped.

I'm not sure what ratchet you're referring to, but the Chinese raised panel and USA raised panel mechanisms will interchange.

I tried swapping them and they worked.

Here's a thread I made comparing the two.
