Looks like a match to me, I know Irwin makes a lot of truck brands taps, dies and drill bits.

turns out i bought the s/o one for $185 new on ebay, so i can't complain on this particular one...

BUT, if i bought the item at full retail (or anywhere close) and the absolutely 100% identical item was on amazon at less than half the price under a different name, i would be pretty pissed - i know other people make a lot of s/o's tools, but typically when i could find the match, there are slight differences, maybe something else thrown in...i don't know - but to just put your sticker on it and double the price...it's offensive

i am sorry if this sounds naive...i suppose most on here already know this is what happens

I bought some Snap On left handed drill bits, then I bought the irwin extractor kit with the left handed drill bits, they are exactly the same, Snap On doesn't even brand them anymore.

well, in this case, for double the price, you do get the snap on logo on the pieces

the case, however, is identical just with an s/o sticker slapped on (and red instead of blue, of course) - hopefully the irwin stickers are better...the s/o stickers fall off (not just on this item...most of them)

i guess what this serves as is MOTIVATION to research every single s/o item and see if someone else makes it first so you can just buy that one for half the price

There's a sticky for exactly that research, at the top of this page. The Truck Brands equivalent thread.

the Amazon link lists the Irwin set's COO as China, SnapOn lists theirs as USA. I didn't look into it further

if you go to the q/a:

Question: What is the country of origin of this product?
Answer: Tools made in U.S.A. I'VE FOUND NO DEFECT IN THIS TOOL SET. It's always been worth the price. Enjoy!

I just went out to my toolbox to take a look at this set and what I found was that each tap and tie is clearly marked "USA". It don't say made in usa but I assume that because it says USA that it is in fact made in the USA. " Thank you " for buying american. That is the reason that I own this set.I worked with a guy tha… see more

While Irwin makes the SO kit, you can argue that, the dies are made different. SO are a double bed design with a split and tension screw. It's in are hex and I don't think split design. Not that really matters. What does, SO is lifetime warranty. Snap a tap, get a new one free, no questions asked.

you're kidding, right?

i know...i feel like an idiot

for years i have read the ad infinitum threads on here about snap on and were they worth the premium - i never had an issue with any s/o item being so much more than a competing equivalent ...they were 2 different things - you could believe that made in usa, or s/o mfg or warranty or brand image, were worth it - if there are differentiators that people can place different value on, fine - that is the free market

but to slap a label on someone else's thing and double the price is outrageous...it is the SAME item - identical - ditto -

yep ... as i said... i am a naive fool for not quite getting this is what s/o was doing (and yes, i get they don't do this with everything and yes i get some stuff is their own...the point remains for cases like the above)

Not true. Its considered a consumable item like a drill bit and doesn't carry the same warranty. Not saying a dealer wouldn't cover them, but they don't have to.

Just FYI. The small 4 or5 piece ti left drill set in the plastic/vinyl pouch snappy Sella is not Hansen/Irwin... It's HIT...made in usa. I have the hit and have seen the Irwin... Look very similar, probably because it used to be Hansen which Irwin bought..
Anyway, I compared both HIT and snappy in hand...both saw usa, just no warranty on hit, though less than half price.

Never had one single problem getting a tap replaced. My dealer has always told me, yup, it's warranty. Even the Mac guy when he is pushing the Mac labled Irwin kit always makes the point they are covered under a lifetime warranty. Same goes for any Irwin rebranded exactor from any of the tools. They can never hand me a new one free of charge fast enough.

edl : it happens with all kinds of items, not just tools. every day stuff. stuff you buy in the grocery store.
it's not a "dishonest" business practice - it's been going on for well over a century.
there are some people who will buy the brand regardless - even knowing it's the same damn thing - I used to see it with car parts all the time. "Ooooh, this one says "Borg Warner" on the box, so it must be better."
same/same with tools. all the truck brands outsource all kinds of stuff.

Funny how everyone passed over that commit.

They look similar so they must be the same.

WhiffySpark i dealt with this one - see my post just under it - has the q/a from under the item and it confirms it is us

and when you look here, they are us:

http://www.irwin.com/uploads/products/brochure/16_2013_Taps_and_Dies_eBook.pdf

and these are the same as in the s/o set

four.cycle - i hear you...for example gas: i know that the same distributor brought the load, but at times i choose the slightly higher price for identical b/c i am almost out and it is closest - the other one has the convenience store...something

but this is like having a premium handle and a premium handle next to each other...mark one chevron and the other brand x and charge 20c more for chevron - if i think it is chevron proprietary product, or they have added a detergent package or their tanks are less rusty or something, i might choose it - but to have it pull the same liquid for 20c more is a dishonest practice or at least, wrong - anyway, i don't mind b/c it just proves the old saying: do your homework, don't trust people trying to take your money and have your eyes wide open

they tricked me once, shame on them - if i let them trick me again, shame on me

^ ALL of the gasoline on the west coast (Washington Oregon California) comes out of the Arco refinery in Ferndale, Washington.
Every drop of it.
The additives they dump in might be different, but up and down the I-5 corridor, gas is gas.

... but back to your Snap-on....

I posted this in another thread a while back... it's about those laminated ratcheting box wrenches sold under any number of different brand names.... but you'll get the idea ... it isn't limited to only taps and dies and ratcheting box wrenches, by any means:
