Are you a hoarder?

No - I'm a pack rat!

Me too.. Although I'm not real sure what the major difference is!

Hoarder now makes me think of the people on tv, houses full of trash not just stuff. My house and property are clean, but I have long since had a habit of holding onto stuff like lumber, metal, car parts, etc that have been with me for years and moved to different houses with me and not being used.

In the past 2-3 years I've grown very tired of it and over that time have been taking loads to recycle or the dump. I've come to the conclusion that the free space is worth much more to me in the present time, than the few dollars I may save 6 years in the future from having re-buy something I trashed to make room..

I don't think I'm a hoarder but there are certain items, for some unknown reason, that refuse to leave my house. the biggest offenders are footwear and jackets. I really do have to go through them someday and make a trip (or 2) to goodwill. The ones that seem to collect are in decent shape but i just don't wear them anymore. The ones that are worn out or plain funky go in the trash but I just can't seem to shake the others. They're all neatly stored but they're still here taking up space. I am guilty of keeping every extra fastener I've ever had (leftovers mostly). This I just consider thrifty and smart as I've found quite a few uses for the various bits and pieces over the years. That's a little something I got from my dad. He always had a big wall rack full of nuts and bolts. I guess I need to get one of those racks and organize them.

thinking more on it, my wife and i do have a room in the basement that houses boxes full of things the 2 of us seem to bring with us every time we move but never get rid of. For example I have a few boxes full of cheap crappy kitchen stuff from my bachelor days. I'll never use them and they wouldn't be worth selling in a yard sale but still I hang onto them. Guess I need to finally clean out that room and build a playroom for the wee fella.
I was browsing a thread here on GJ where a guy built a minimalist type house and garage. one of my life's big goals is to accomplish something similar. Maybe not to that extreme but I just want to get rid of all the clutter and not have to weave around stuff to get where I'm going. For example, my wife and I have 2 couches, a love seat and 5 or 6 arm chairs in a 2300 sq foot house with one living room and one rec room. that's not to mention the end tables and coffee tables. There are only us 2, our 11 month old son and 2 dogs that live here!!

i've also watched that hoarders show. I just don't get it. I know it's usually a symptom of some sort of mental condition but don't these people have friends and families that can help them?? I know if my older sister ever came to my place and saw a mess remotely as bad as that she'd tie me to a tree and bring in a cleaning crew. Sure I'd be mad at her but I'd soon realize I was better off for her doing it. I'd do the same for her and any of my family members and friends. The "therapists" they have on that show are nothing but enablers. The sooner they realize that these people can't be coddled and persuaded to clean up their act, the better off these people will be. A little "tough love" never hurt anyone.

I've wondered about this on the show as well. They say the person has to come to grips with what's happening or they'll do it again. I don't know, but I think you'd be better off sending the person away for the weekend too. Doesn't make for as good TV, I suppose. It's that whole "we're up against a deadline here..." concept that nearly every show on TV has adopted lately.

It's amazing to me how many people say they started having problems after life-changing events: Death of a parent, divorce, etc.

I used to hound and beg mom and dad on getting rid of stuff, never got anywhere. I went as far as loading up a 16' trailer with all the scrap metal I could load [over 5,000 lbs] and hauled it to the recycler. He just got mad and accused me of trying to make money off of him. I think I got $50-75 for the load. I told him he could have the money and I would have made more at work on ot. I gave up until they hit the nursing home. I then declared war once they were there. I gave a guy permission to remove all the metal, unless it was tools, then ask. I filled the trash can full every week. I took loads of stuff to goodwill. I had a 1 pickup bed of nothing but shoes and old clothes rounded off.

I am an anti-hoarder. If I haven't used it recently or don't plan on using it...I get rid of it. I can't stand stuff cluttering up my house or garage. There is a great feeling to cleansing and de-cluttering.

This is me. My wife likes to cram things into corners and cabinets, and I like to go through it and throw it away. About every 3 months she asks where something is and accuses me of throwing it away, but its never anything we have to buy again or mind much about buying again.

I mean, what do you need an old cellphone that has been replaced 3 times since for?

I'm in constant battle with myself in the garage though. I have crappy storage and continue to aquire tools & useful things. What I really need is a real garage with adequate storage space and places for items I'd like to use. I still manage to find plenty to chuck now and again, and always get a nice warm and fuzzy feeling from making room.

Nope, and never will be. It drives me crazy when I drive through my neighborhood and see people's garage door open and it's crammed full of **** and all they have is a little pathway cut through the mess to get to their door. I don't keep what I dont use. Cannot stand having **** laying around taking up space.

Not sure...there's twice as much now, but no ****, just NOS or good used.

I'm in love.

Freecycle has been an absolute gem for me in being able to get rid of usable items guilt free.

I'm so into Freecycle as well. Wonderful concept!
