It is funny 'cause I do like tools and some people may call me a hoarder, but when I need a tool it is never close to me. It may be at my mom's or a property I own or somewhere else. So I spend my time looking for my tools. The last tool I misplaced and still wondering where I put it would be my "RIVET" gun.

What is worse is when I decide to put this tool in that bag because it is used in conjunction with the other tools in the bag, I suddenly lose the tool. Or shall I say I forget where I put it. Go figure.
if you had 6 of them, you should be able to find at least one.

A "hoarder" indicates a problem. Only problem I have is garage space for my tools. After several reorganizations I dread ever moving. My need a semi

Does suddenly acquiring my Dad's hand tools, mint table saw and miter saw making my personal totals: table saw x2 and miter saw x3 make me a tool hoarder? Now I got enough hand tools to stock three diy garages

Fretters do you have one picture that we could all look at of the lathe in question.
A few photo's. Some of these are the seller photo's, as the larger machines especially were totally disassembled when I transported them.

5" dual height bed. The tailstock runs on a second set of ways above the main ways on these.

Note: We refer to centre height over here, so double it to equate to your system of quoting overall swing/diameter.

I have a fairly good tool collection for both wood and metal but the bottom line is that room is needed to make stuff and fix stuff. When the lathe came in, the beer fridge went out. What will be voted out when the mill comes in?

I have about 7 complete sets of wrenches (Gearwrench x2, Craftsman ratcheting, Craftsman RP x2, Blackhawk reverse ratcheting, Kobalt), not to mention the oddballs and large 1-1/4+ wrenches.

I have a lot of pliers. Channellock, Knipex, Vise Grip, and others

And to a lesser extent, Craftsman mechanic tool sets. I have 2 sets of the 283 piece (Comes in a plastic 'tool box' with 3-drawers), a 119-piece kit, and a couple smaller <60 piece kits.

Me, no, I save a lot of stuff but have a place for it out of my work way. I no longer buy things I don't need even if they are cheap. I was wondering if Poncho was a compulsive hoarder but maybe there is a glimmer as he actually sold some stuff he didn't need,,,, hahaha Most total compulsives do not do that.

Like so many on this forum, I also have way more tools than I need. I also would love to pass some of this stuff down to someone who would appreciate USA made tools.

With so many cheap chinese tools out there, most young people could care less about quality USA stuff.

The hard part is when you go to downsize (say, reducing your number of screwdrivers to less than 50) what do you do with the tols you've culled? I mean, you can't just throw away tools, right? What if you may need that for... something...

Sell them inexpensively, or give some to a young person who shows a serious interest in learning.

It would be an interesting idea to put together basic tool packages for underprivileged youth that are interested in working on things..

Sorry, it was my first thought when I saw a picture of all of those blue channel locks. I recently went through my tool box and will be giving / making my son and daughters their own tool kits.

Later

Great idea.

This is where I'm at. If I don't use it on a regular basis I just consider it as something I don't need and I get rid of it.

I went to an estate sale the other day where the guy obviously bought up every old wrench, pair of pliers, ratchet, etc. that he ever came across and it reminded me that more is not better. I'll take 2 or 3 nice ratchets that I use every day vs. 200 ratchets that I paid $2 each for but which just sit in a drawer and take up space.

Same. I have somewhere around 8 ratchets for the entire side range. They are all used for different things and are all great quality. I've been trying to decide if I should keep my pex tools leftover from my days as a plumber. It's one of those things that doesn't get a lot of use currently, but if I run into it again, nothing else will do.

I appreciate the older finer tools but I don't hoard them. Sure I wouldn't mind a few but I also don't want anything I'm afraid to use. I don't get tools if I can't use them. Some of the collections on here are amazing but I'm not one for it. I do have a lot of tools in my opinion but I need more. But I don't have buckets of tools everywhere. I want tools for their usefulness. I don't collect tools, I use them. I might be on the lookout for stuff but I am not a collector.
Same.

I am down to about 17 tool boxes full of tools. My box of overflow, American made wrenches bigger than 15/16 just started on its second box.

Don't get me started on Mustang parts!!
That is what makes cleaning up so hard. I swept a new area last week and had to dig through the junk with my brother. "Look! a distributor hold down for a pre-65 small block! Passenger side courtesy light for a 69! Door panel clip, you get the picture.

Well I gotta go do research on the stuff I bought at auction yesterday. Does anyone know anything about an All American Die Filer with a DoALL jig on it?

I am still trying to get DOWN to just one of most stuff...not really!

Hoarder. yes. i hate throwing anything away. someone might need it someday.

specifically a "Tool Hoarder". not.(yet) but likely on my way there too.

luckily i dont have the money to buy all the things i want and desire. i do get addicted to buying something.. like.. flashlights.. after 60 i stopped counting.. i use like 10 all the time and another 20 sometimes and then others are just there useless.. plus the most liked ones backups.. then i moved into pocket knives, something like 50 later.. i dont need to get much more of them.. i only use something like 10 of them and their backups and then play with 10 others.. multitools, i was able to stop buying after 20 or so.. although i still havent gotten any of the bigger leathermans yet.. hmmm..

I think of it more as being well equipped to defeat those evil rat ******* automobile designers and engineers who keep making it harder to access components on new vehicles, than hoarding but, that's just me.
I will confess though that I have more tools than I will ever use.

so... what exactly constitutes "hoarding"?
it seems that no matter how many more tools I buy, I continue to run into situations where I need more tools.
it's simply a matter of filling a need.
I'm not getting this "hoarding" thing. I remain mystified.

I think hoarding is when you loose count. I don't mean forgetting one or two but when you have hundreds of virtually the same thing. If you have buckets of pliers that could no hoarding. Even if they are organized in tool boxes or on the wall when you approach hundreds of #2 screwdrivers than you have a problem. I think having a bunch of random tools that you only need once isn't the samething as hoarding.

My life, health and family are not negatively impacted by the size of my tool collection. My house and garage do not stink of butyric acid. I'm not in danger from a toolslide. I don't have to climb over piles of tools (or anything else) to get to anything. The County has never threatened to clean up my place for me. I regularly get rid of inferior and duplicate tools. There is room for things other than tools in my workshops, and I get work done with my tools.

So, no, I'm not a tool hoarder.

^^^^ This,

Like nine, These days 95% of the time it has to be a great deal , and there are plenty out there and even then I have really slowed down. I haven't really counted up my number of wrench sets, etc. but I am definitely not a hoarder.

I was at a real tool hoarders sale a couple of weekends ago. Tools thrown/stuffed in every room of the house and garage, and I mean the house was basically unlivable. The guy looked like he frequented garage sales and never saw a tool he didn't like, most likely because stuff was cheap. His buddies were there cleaning out his house and garage while he for the most part just sat in a chair in the driveway and watched. The buddies were saying they were cleaning out the house because the guy lost it due to back taxes owed. The were saying if he had just sold some of the tools over the years he would have had plenty of money to cover his taxes. The house looked like something out of that hoarders TV show. House was in a regular Joe's neighborhood, makes you feel kind of bad for the neighbors.

I am looking to leave all my tools to one of the tech schools at the local community college and/or the special tech high schools they have around here.

Good question. I know I'm borderline, but I hate being ill prepared for whatever life throws at me, too.
I'd say I'm most guilty of "aspirational hoarding" or buying things with a particular intent or purpose in mind, either soon, or further down the road, but I do tend to use what I buy.

My most irrational purchases would be multitools, really odd or unusual tools, and Diamond Horseshoe stuff. I'm bad for Diamond...I see it, and if it's reasonably priced, it's coming to my house!

I have had to redefine what is a really good deal to keep from buying too much stuff. My new standard is if a complete stranger would punch me in the mouth for being stupid by not buying something...I might buy it.

Just don't read any of my recent posts showing stuff I just bought.

What is the point of buying a tool you already own?
This makes no sense.

One for the house, one for the shop, one for the car, a loaner tool and one in case one breaks. You NEED multiples of some tools.
I only have one lathe, one mill, one mig welder, one tig welder and one plasma cutter but I'm working on that now. :lol_hitti
