Hey guys hopefully someone might be able to assist me.
Was at my local tool shop, picked up a few bits and as I was paying, I was chatting with the shopkeeper. As he was adding up the total I noticed the Armstrong ratchet on the counter and mentioned that was not part of my purchase. He asked did I want it, I mention I had seen then in the clearance section but no I wouldn't bother. He said it's yours for free if you want it. It was purchased, but returned as the two machine screws that hold it together were actually missing.
I thought free is a good price so throw it in. I buy a good bit up there, know the three guys that work the counter reasonably well. So it was nice.
Well I have tried find the spec on what's required to replace them. But failed, I know Armstrong is gone. But emailed them anyway. Inbox is full. I can't even find reference to this particular ratchet. It's more then likely the sane machine screws that's used on several ratchets.
So anyone know what machine screws to buy?
Any help greatly appreciated, it's a nice ratchet. Would like to put it to some use.:dunno:

Looking at pictures of the smaller, blue handle 3/8 version I am seeing Allen head screws. You should be able to figure out the correct thread and length. Depending on the depth of the head recess, it is a flat or filister head. This is all generic stuff. If it otherwise works, it is not rocket science to find a couple of screws that fit. The screws are probably metric. If you are looking for two GENUINE Armstrong screws in a bag, you are probably out of luck. Armstrong made for Sears and Matco and some designs are now in the Apex Gearwrench, made in Taiwan line. Which ones, i can't say. Just find a couple of screws.

You meant 3/8 drive didn't you? If it's a 3/8 drive 36-tooth Armstrong ratchet, the repair kit #11-990 will have the screws.

The screws would be metric? That's unexpected. I had assumed they would not. It's metric only over here, so trying to figure out the size required in a system I don't know at all was what put me off. If they are metric, that greatly simplify things for me.
Thanks for all your assistance gents, that had pointed me in the right direction.

P.s. yes ment to say 3/8 and not 3/4.

Wait! I'm going do dig into my catalog collection and find a picture of a 11-908. It seems as though Armstrong replaced that ratchet with the 11-978 which is what's pulling up on the internet. The 11-908 is a ghost right now. I have a gut feeling that it's a 30 tooth which would be a different repair kit number. And I also suspect those screws are standard, not metric.

Wamsutta,

Your good! Just counted the clicks and your right, it's 30, not 36. I will buy the repair kit if it's the best option. But this isn't going to get much use in all honesty have other ratchets that I would pick over it. So screwsonly would be my preferred option. I will be in the workshop this evening, should have some spare time to try take some measurements.

LostBoy, I'm sorry. I thought I had an older Armstrong catalog but I don't. I have two that say copyright 2000. That 36 tooth kit might still drop in if the ratchet head dimensions are the same. I know with Snap-on, their 30 tooth repair kit will drop into a 20 tooth ratchet just fine. Look at this link and see if you can tell if the ratchet head shape is similar:

I would take it to a good industrial fastener supplier, they should have imperial machine screws, even in metric only countries, although I am well aware how sparse western Ireland is for finding anything.

Wamsutta, No apologies required at all, you are very helpful.
At work, so will check out the pics this evening.
Went trough a box of random tiny parts, and no luck with it. Found a 2.5mm and it doesn't fit, too big. Will See if I can find a 2mm, that should be close to right diameter, if that doesn't work it is more than likely not metric. Which means I need to research the equivalents.

Dutchgray, that is the problem, those kinds of shops are few and far between this side of the country.
