I bought this Armstrong - Bray puller set awhile ago at an auction of military surplus tools. Recently, I started to notice how incomplete it was when I went to put together the bearing splitter setup. Specifically, the big "H" bar across the center is NOT threaded where the main shaft is supposed to go through. Needless to say, I couldn't use it...am I not getting something?

Does anybody here have an inventory sheet for this set or a more complete example? I searched online and came up with nothing. Thanks in advance....

The bar isn't supposed to be threaded. It's a push/puller. The nut that 4th from the left in the top storage hole threads on the center shaft with a hard washer between it and the H beam. Do you have the center shaft? It will be the same size as the hole with a point on one end and a square drive on the other.

As a former Air Force KC-135 and B-52 crewchief and tool crib superviser I love old military tools. Here's some info based on the NSN number.

It's not real old, the NSN has a -00- in it, the -00- came out on the 1960's I believe as more parts and equipment had to be numbered and accounted for. Newer equipment had 00 or 01, effectively making the system 100 times larger without having to change older numbers.

Universal Puller Kit National Stock Number 5180-00-423-1596, has the following description:

All-in-one puller kit. Includes 2 external two-jaw gear and bearing pullers with single-ended grips; 1 puller with a pair of legs 9-1/2" long; 3 pairs of push pullers; 1 internal two-jaw gear and bearing puller with double-ended grip; legs measuring 4-1/2
