Armstrong ratchet rebuild

Does anyone know of a rebuild kit for this Armstrong ratchet? The direction lever is broken.

I feel like this model may be one of the ones that Matco kits interchange with - and maybe even one of the models that you can put a rebuild kit in and turn into an 88 tooth model? Worth investigating that route...

The repair kit model number is 11-990. I think that it was the 60t models that were interchangeable with the 88t models, and not these 36t models.

Nope. That ratchet internals aren't interchangeable with Matco 60/88 tooth kits nor Gearwrench 60/84 tooth kits. Only the Armstrong Maxx series ratchets with the figure 8 thin metal gear cover secured by a snap ring can accept Matco/Gearwrench repair kits.

No. The Craftsman 36t used a different mechanism with a cover plate affixed by a snap ring. Armstrong and Allen did offer a mechanism of that same design, but still aren't interchangeable.

Hey fellas, bringing this thread back as I'm also looking to repair my 12-973 armstrong. I also broke the directional lever and need one, hate to put a nice USA made armstrong in the back of the box just for this reason.

I also damaged my Armstrong ratchet a while back, rounded off part of the pawl that has those same internals. I found a repair kit on ebay last winter, however, the repair kit was listed for more than what I could buy an entire ratchet for, so I never repaired it because it seemed un-economical and now it sits in my scrap metal bucket from what I learned Armstrong doesn't make repair kits for them anymore and they're hard to come buy unless you know the right people who happen to have some they want to let go.

Thanks for the reply. I'll keep my eyes out and see if anything comes up, sure hate to toss this thing, really like the finish and the wya the handle feels in bigger hands.

The common part to break on these models is the selector. Armstrong was the only 1 that used this style selector & cover plate.
The pawls,springs, ball bearings are the same as any other Danaher/Apex made 36 tooth ratchet.
The anvil (gear) is the same as the Matco 36 tooth versions in the same drive size. I believe Matco just discontinued the kits recently. Kits are out there, but if you find 1 it will set you back $25 or more.

If you can find a kit for $25, well worth the fix in my opinion to keep a classic Armstrong working. I’d spend the $25 to fix it. In my mind it’s the same cost as new new ratchet and you keep the classic running.

Can a replacement switch lever be made that would be slightly stronger than the original? That original looks fragile
