This was my grandfathers old ratchet, so I'm somewhat undecided what to do. I can take it to fastenal and get it warrantied out, but I'd like to rebuild it if possible. It's skipping with minimal force applied. I've pulled it apart and put it back together to no avail.

So...is there anyone on here that may have a gear set/rebuild kit?

Any idea of how old this thing is?

When you took it apart did it appear to be damaged? Sometimes the main gear in an old ratchet gets so full of hardened grease that it skips and slips constantly. Soak it in acetone and use a pick to scrape out the rock hard grease and it may just work great again.

First this ^^^ And if the teeth are clean take a good sharp pic of the thing open showing the pawls... if those are rounded, a careful hit with a grinder could fix it.

Also see if they have rebuild kits available; most companies w/warranties do for the most popular ratchets.

In my humble opinion, a ratchet with that kind of history, deserves to be held onto, if a repair isn't viable.

I have one my dad gave it to me. He is 71 I never use it. I had to buy new countersunk bolts for it and cut them down. Working or not I would never get rid of it. Yours is in much better condition than mine.

Yeah, I think I will just find a donor, make it working again and set it on the shelf. No sense in tearing it up and never finding the gears again

One other thought, if the pawls and gear look good and clean - could be the pawl springs have lost their "springy-ness" and don't hold the pawls tight enough or return them quickly enough against the gear. Could open up a wider selection of donor ratchets, if same drive size Proto/Pendleton ratchets use the same size cone springs - I might have to check a few later...

Pawls

Main gear

There appears to be nothing out of order other than the small spots on the gear (if you can see them. Springs may be the problem, sounds logical. Also it appears the only thing lubricating It is something the consistency of graphite?

i would give the springs a little pull, clean the gear teeth and pawl teeth thoroughly with a wire brush. maybe even running a pick down the grooves to clean out any possible buildup. those pawls could also benefit from a few careful file swipes.

it actually looks fairly decent and it should get be repaired to at least lightt work if not even heavy work.

not a big fan of graphite as a ratchet lube. give it a few drops of rll for the win.

I'm just spitballing because I can't really tell by the picture, but does the other paw have a spring behind it also? It might just be compressed and I can't see it..
